Default Atlanta braces for plunging temperatures, ice, maybe snow

ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlantans awoke to relatively mild weather Tuesday, but forecasters warned that streets could still become icy as fans arrive for the Super Bowl, with temperatures expected to drop more than 20 degrees during the day.

More than 100 of Tuesday's flights were canceled at Atlanta's airport and schools were closed across the city "in an abundance of caution" ahead of the storm front, which was churning toward Georgia Tuesday just as thousands of fans begin pouring into town for Super Bowl 53.

It was sweater weather for the morning commute. Office workers made crunching sounds stepping on the salt spread generously over Marietta Street, one of the main thoroughfares downtown. The salt caught the light from outdoor video boards set up for the Super Bowl, and reflected shades of blue, red and green.

Even a threat of icy weather is taken seriously in Atlanta, five years after cars, trucks and school buses became marooned on the southern city's freeways in what became known as "snow jam."

Seems kind of silly to talk about 20 degrees paralyzing a city when it's -60 up north. Get your shit together Atlanta.

Atlanta is a massive city that's hot as **** most of the year. No one wants to be up north. They're not having the Super Bowl in Green Bay for a reason.

Good thing the game will be in their new stadium - it is something else for sure

Isn't that an argument for Atlanta getting their shit together? Or nah?

Maybe that's why they're using "an abundance of caution".

If none of my teams are involved, I'd really love to see a Super Snow Bowl. The dirty truth, however, is the Super Bowl is where corporate America flashes their bling at each other and the big wigs have no intention of freezing their asses off. There are some that claim the government shutdown ended because the donor class pressured both parties to get the TSA and air traffic control fully staffed again so that their corporate jets could get to and from Hartsfield without delays. I'd enjoy watching a game with huge snow drifts in Chicago, Green Bay or Buffalo (or Denver for that matter).
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

I have mixed feelings on that. I want to see the two best teams duking it out without any weather involved, but I'd also appreciate seeing weather possibly play a part in who is actually the best team.

I think they should pick a neutral dome stadium and have it there every year.

Am I the only one rooting for the weather here? I hope they have to cancel the game.
