That was a clear incompletion the past several years but people either didn't like that or somehow found it too confusing.

I suppose I'm in the minority of people who think offense is easy enough while expecting receivers to actually hold onto the ball.

I much prefer this rule. Requiring you to maintain possession to the ground even after you had taken two steps and made a football move was an awful rule.
