Default Jon Gruden getting calls from players 'dying' to play for Raiders

Jon Gruden's first season back with the Oakland Raiders has been marked by a 1-6 record and trading two of the team's biggest stars.

He says that hasn't affected other players' desire to play for his team next season, however.

In an interview with Fox Sports that will air Thursday night before Oakland's game against the San Francisco 49ers, Gruden tells former Raiders great Howie Long that players around the league have expressed their desire to play for him in 2019. Fox Sports released a preview of the interview Thursday morning.

"I got a cellphone just like you and everybody else. I get a lot of phone calls from people that are dying to come play here. I'm just telling you. They're dying to play for the Raiders," Gruden said.

"And to have salary-cap space and to have a chance to talk to the people that you really want to wear the silver and black, the guys you really want to wear the silver and black and represent this team, that's exciting."

I thought that a coach could not talk with players under contract with other teams, or am I wrong?

Maybe he's referring to people from off the streets. After all, Kurt Warner won a SB 2 or 3 years after he was bagging groceries. Maybe the next KW will be wearing silver & black

Who wouldn’t want the security of playing for a guy who would get rid of Cooper and Mack?

Default DE Bruce Irvin to be released by Raiders

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have told defensive end Bruce Irvin that they will release him, a source confirmed to ESPN, ending a star-crossed 2½-year tenure with the team.

Irvin was not on Saturday's NFL transaction wire, meaning he cannot be released until 4 p.m. ET Monday. When he is released, he will then go on waivers.

The Athletic first reported that Irvin was being released.

I didn't know DRC retired... mid season.... was he hurt or was this really a clear case of a player just having enough of a shit situation?
