Default Supreme Court strikes down federal law prohibiting sports gambling

The Supreme Court struck down a federal law that prohibits sports gambling Monday in a landmark decision that gives states the go-ahead to legalize betting on sports.

The court ruled to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA), a 1992 law that barred state-authorized sports gambling with some exceptions. It made Nevada the only state where a person could wager on the results of a single game.

States that want to offer legal sports betting may now do so, and New Jersey plans to be first. Delaware, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are among the states expected to quickly get into the legal bookmaking game.

The biggest obstacle we’ve had to it in Idaho comes from the Indian Reservations who are afraid they’ll lose business. The closest reservation is approximately 3 hours from the Boise area.

Before someone hyperventilates while typing a response, please keep in mind that my post was only a statement of fact. It was not meant to oppose or support the stance of the Reservations in Idaho.

They said it would take a few months to get the legislation passed in order to make it happen in AZ.

AZ is loaded with Reservation casinos, 3 or 4 of which border the metro Phoenix area. Not only will they have a vested interest in stopping the legislation, so will the anti-gaming lobby.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in Idaho. Do you think it will quickly be passed in California?

I honestly don't know what to expect state by state at this stage - but intuition tells me that there is too much money at stake for any anti-gambling lobbies to kill it except for in maybe the most conservative states.

That’s hard to gauge. Nevada votes down the middle.

Here it is by and large strong lobbying by the reservations providing the opposition. I’m curious to know if that will change now that the federal law is clarified.

We had a strong push to allow horse betting at the local track which got shot down at the governor level a few years ago. My guess is the fight will be strong in support of it this time around because the Boise horse track can’t support itself without betting on other races allowed. Local businesses were not happy with the governor over the lack of communication regarding his quick veto.

Aside from that, who the freak drives 3 hours to bet on a baseball game?

Louisiana will probably be near the front. New Orleans wants to expand gambling quite a bit.

I could see the gulf coast becoming a hot bed for river boat casinos.

What does this mean for online betting?
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.
