This sucks. I met the Gunny a few times. Good man. America's Drill Instructor and the face of Marine Corps Boot Camp since Full Metal Jacket.
Rest in Peace Gunny, and Semper Fi!

RIP, Gunny!

Basically gunnys run everything in a unit. There aren't a lot but they're in charge of each functional area. After Gunny you either become a 1stSgt where you deal with personnel issues only, or you become a Master Sergeant where you deal more with your job field.
I was a Gunny for 7 years, that's where I ran maintenance shops around the world. As a MSgt I'm considered to be a professional in maintenance, but I'm not in charge of anything anymore. I report to, and advise the General, on everything maintenance related but my main job is to make sure everyone has what they need (parts, tools, test equipment, Marines, etc), set policy, etc

I didn't realize he was actually in the service - Marines.
RIP Gunny. Memorable role - for sure.
I also didn't realize it was his voice in Toy Story.
I can only imagine how a Sgt. Hartman would go over in today's multi-gendered military. He'd be court-martialed before the first f-word crossed his lips.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.
