Not exactly free agency related, but Joe Thomas announced that he’s retiring. Great player stuck on a bad team his whole career.

Sorry to see Joe go. He was such a great, great player.

Really surprising Thomas is retiring right when it seems like they might turn a corner in Cleveland...

Cugel will go to his grave with nightmares of us not trading for him.

i think it's a solid signing for that price, and what we expect of him. . . we needed a capable vet 3rd corner, and he's that guy. . . will turn 30 during pre-season, he should have a year or two left in the tank. . . has played outside and in the slot, and has started 40 games, so he brings good experience and versatility. . . not a special guy, but at least he's not 35 years old. . . he's been a contributor on good defenses in the past. . . i think he's a decent value signing. . . where's coach chaz or G when we need them?

Brock is a versatile corner - he can play well in the slot or outside. I don't expect them to use him in the slot as much as some other teams might, but it really depends on how they choose to deploy Chris Harris with Talib gone.

He's got talent, has had production (was really good his last year in SF, and again he contributed well in Minnesota) but then got a 1 year deal from Minnesota and now a reasonable 1 year deal from us instead of real money, which is underpaying him. Why?

*shrugs* He's got skills, and I don't expect all 53 players to be choir boys, but these are hard signings for me to get behind. From a strictly skill-to-money ratio he should be able to fill the role Denver has for him as well or better than anyone else I saw on the market for anywhere near that price. It's a value on-the-field signing, IMO.

    For the rest... whatever.

joe T. on his decision to retire. . .

“As a competitor, you always think that you can still do it, but there a point in your career that you get to that crossroads and you say I just can’t do it anymore, I just don’t have it in my body,” Thomas said. “My mind is good, but my body is not willing, and I think that’s where I am.”

Thomas said that he has a knee that simply won’t allow him to continue to practice and play.

“For me, looking down the barrel of a knee replacement, I think that definitely becomes a decision where you’re like, ‘Hey, this football has been amazing, it’s been more than I could ever have expected, but you have to take other things into consideration if you’re deciding if you’re going to be able to play football anymore,'” Thomas said. “The last two to three years of my career it’s been almost impossible for me to practice.”

My opinion may differ. I think he's a boom or bust type of player. He can get you an interception and 3 pass break ups one week and give up 7 receptions and 3 TD's the next. For 1/$4, I guess we could do worse, but dont be surprised if he frustrates you throughout the season. Personally, I was hoping for TJ Carrie.

Let us ask ourselves: Should we be making fun of anyone else's backup linemen?

*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.
