    According to multiple articles:

But this wasn't a decision about money. The truth is, McDaniels, 41, has been vacillating on this decision throughout the interview process, ever since meeting with the Colts on wild-card weekend. It is the reason a second meeting with Colts officials and team owner Jim Irsay was held. McDaniels was trying to get comfortable with the idea of taking his family out of New England and moving to Indianapolis, sources said.

Throughout the process, McDaniels had emphasized to the Colts that he would need time to mull the decision and discuss it with his family. The more McDaniels reflected on potentially having the opportunity to coach the Colts, the more it did not feel right to him and the better it felt to remain in New England.
Doesn't sound like he necessarily strung the Colts along. Sounds like he was upfront and told them he would need time to mull the decision

    Not to mention that
On Sunday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported there still are concerns about Andrew Luck's shoulder and whether he could wind up needing additional surgery.
Accepting your second and potentially final head coaching job when the team's QB position is a HUGE question mark and the team doesn't have great draft position to potentially grab a franchise QB sounds like a potentially HUGE mistake.

Too bad she doesn't cheer for the Patriots dressed like this

I think he’s a punk bitch who just got scared. He realized it would be hard work to build a winning team in Indy so he backed out. Once a POS, always a POS.

Again, even if you buy this, which I don't - it still makes him a low character shyster.

    What?!!!

They have the 3rd right overall pick! They are in a perfect draft position to get a new qb if they wanted one.

That is excuse doesn’t fly. He’s still a shit head. Can’t wait for the day you pats fans have him and change your tune
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

The amount of pretzel twisting being done by pats fans to justify this is impressive.

Even IF you buy the family story, that just makes him an idiot at best. No team will ever hire him again now. If he came back because of family with no assurances from the pats, the dude is just stupid.

Josh has turned down multiple job offers and interview requests in the past because he didn't want to uproot his family. He has no loyalty to the Colts. His only true loyalty should be to his family.

There's no pretzel twisting going on here.

Rather than criticize Josh as a selfish punk he should be applauded for placing his families well-being over the harsh criticism he was going to receive from the football world.
So... the most likely thing is NOT what you think happened? Almost seems strange that it was mentioned.

Of course he got assurances from NE. Reports are Kraft spoke to him and sweetened the offer.

I guess you can add one more job offer to the list of what he's turned down. But not before he accepted it, and hired other people to be his coaches there...

No pretzel at all. Unless pretzels are like trainwrecks.

Patriots fans trying to act like family is more important than football... I don't see them going to family message boards to talk about families and shit.

Bullshit. If that's what it is you don't interview, you don't accept a position, and you certainly don't start building a staff and effecting the jobs and lives of other people.

No matter your spin this was a garbage move by a person with no integrity, and frankly I think less of anyone even defending him
