Thread: Chiefs agree to trade quarterback Alex Smith to Redskins

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, league sources confirmed to ESPN's Field Yates.

Smith and the Redskins reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The deal cannot be completed until the new league year begins March 14. It is expected to be for a third-round pick and an unidentified player, according to a source.

Hmm this is really interesting. I was kinda hoping we got Alex if Cousins was just going to shop around until he found the highest bidder and then draft a rookie if possible. Alex is going to cost you but not at the same price Cousins will be.

Now, hopefully we do just go all-in and grab Cousins. That probably means getting rid of Talib or one of our WRs and I am ok with that. We have to get this offense back on track.

Would love to see Elway change his mind and give VJ his walking papers too.

If you assume there is no way the Chiefs would trade Smith to the Broncos, which I think would have been the best option for Broncos, but that Chiefs wouldn't do, it does mean Cousins is definitely moving on.

Why would they blame the dude from the subway commercials?

That is interesting, especially with the 4 year extension. Alex Smith is only 33, so I guess he could be a long term bridge but I don't know why you would invest in someone who seemed to peak at midseason this year. Still better than our dumpster fire of a QB situation, just interesting. The first domino falls, I guess!

A pretty hefty contract too, not like they signed him to a bargain basement contract.

The trade will be formally executed in March with the new league year, and when that happens, Smith will formally sign a four-year, $94 million contract, with $71 million in guaranteed money.


There is no word on how much of that $71 million is fully guaranteed, but it is likely to be a sizable chunk. This total guarantee brings him in second behind Matthew Stafford ($92 million total guarantees) and Andrew Luck ($87 million total guarantees). Their respective fully guaranteed money was $60.5 million and $47 million. We don’t know about Smith’s fully guaranteed money, so we certainly have to take things with a grain of salt. But even still, Smith is looking at a serious chunk of fully guaranteed money.

Below is a post I put up based on some PFT stats, including on deep balls, and he was one of the best QBs in the NFL this year in most categories. He's been a solid QB for a long time, and I think maybe Washington sees a QB that if you give him a few weapons can perform and I think this year should have finally put to rest the fact he can't (or won't) throw deep. Give him receivers that can get open deep and he hit them regularly.

Maybe a combination of experience and getting some good weapons around him, showed Smith can lead top tier passing game (3rd ranked passing offense).

Seems like a hefty contract, but QB contracts are becoming more and more about the guaranteed money than the AAV.

Yep. This looks to be more guaranteed and higher average than Carr's six year contract.

The benefit to the guaranteed money is the lower cap hit. Something Elway will surely offer
