Overall i would agree with you. I was always a bigger fan of Testament vs Metallica although Master of Puppets remains one of my alltime favorite records. But hard not to like The New Order, Practice What You Preach, or The Gathering as well. Since i started my blog in 2010 this is my ratings for the last two Testament albums. I enjoyed Dark Roots more than Brotherhood but my favorite Testament album to date is still The New Order.

I feel like that Billy and Co always stayed true to their roots and what they did best, even if they experimented a bit, charts and sales be damned.

IMO everything after Master of Puppets (Justice was just 'good' and sounded like shit) was mediocre at best. And other than Hammett, musicianship is below average. See Ulrich, Lars.

I think a lot of their early sound was led by their early Dave Mustaine influences, and when they went their own way a little bit... well... you know the rest better than anyone. They singlehandedly wrecked the US scene at the time.

I also add this Chuck Billy vs James (YEAH!) Hetfield isnt even a contest.

I will also add to your Mustaine mention that i think another reason why Metallica started going downhill was the loss of Burton. His influence is littered all over those early Metallica releases as well.

North, with all the music that you rank, you probably, surely, have to come across a lot of it that you don't like? Isn't' that tedious?

It can be, i often talk to my friends about how its hard sometimes to actually just sit down and listen/enjoy the music that i really do like. But, as i have been starting to work out more it gives me a chance to do that. Plus, ive started to cut out a lot of cds that i dont listen to anymore and convert over to vinyl. I still have about 800-1000 cds that i still love and will hold onto. Even at work i use the first half of the day for listening to new stuff and then the 2nd half i just throw on my ipod for listening pleasure. There are some albums that are dreadful but unless a record is a 9 or 10 i really dont pay it any mind anymore other than a song here or there. Even when albums are rated as "average" (5-6) or "good" (7-8) i can move on and forget about them because there is just so much shit out there. Its a love/hate relationship with my hobby as a radio station owner/blogger but i find people really do appreciate it. Especially the less known and more local bands who are still trying to make a name for themselves who appreciate that i give them airplay, etc.
