Default Raiders' pursuit of Jon Gruden could include ownership stake

The Oakland Raiders are preparing to pursue ESPN analyst Jon Gruden with an offer so strong it could even include an ownership stake in the teams, according to league sources.

Gruden will be tempted to accept it, according to sources, but would prefer not to make any decisions until the regular season finishes Sunday and the Raiders make a final determination on their current head coach, Jack Del Rio, who signed a contract extension last summer.

But Oakland long has appealed to Gruden for a variety of reasons. He would return to an organization he didn't want to leave in 2001, he would inherit a young quarterback in Derek Carr whom he feels strongly about, and he would get to coach a team that is slated to move in 2020 to Las Vegas, where he would not have to pay state tax, as he does now in Florida, where he currently lives. Gruden's contract even could be backloaded to pay him more in the Nevada years and lessen his tax burden during the Oakland ones.

Wow, I'd jump on that in a heartbeat.

Depending on the details of the ownership stake.

Man I hope he doesn't take it. That would be a really good hire.

You sure he doesn't want Tony Dungy to go build the team for him first.

Oakland Raiders fire head coach Jack Del Rio

A year after leading the Raiders to their first playoff berth in more than a decade, Jack Del Rio's run in Oakland is over.

Del Rio announced that owner Mark Davis told him after the Raiders loss to the Chargers that he was fired.

Del Rio, who received a four-year contract extension from the Raiders in February, posted an 18-13 mark with the franchise.

Around The NFL will have more on Del Rio's firing soon.

So true. We should go further back and get Art Shell. He was 10-3 vs. Denver.

    EDIT: 11-3.

I think there is a romantic idealation of chuckie, when in reality he was just a decent coach, but very entertaining.

Far better in Oakland than in Tampa. And if he didn't have Dungy's defense...and our playbook... who knows what he would've done in Tampa. Heck were it not for a rule that is no longer in the NFL, who knows what he would've done in Oakland if he wasn't traded. But I agree in that his persona is bigger than his accomplishments. I still won't mind a second run.

I really like Gruden, and it will make me sad to have to root against him in Oakland.

I like how they gave the river an extension last year and then fire him. They continue to be a well run organization.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some chuckie...but he's a tad bit overrated.

At least they have a quick trigger finger. Is Vance's key card still working?
