It's hard to tell. It wasn't illegal by the rules of the sport. It was an institutional failure.

When did it become illegal by the rules of the sport? I thought that since they were drugs that you would need to get a prescription for, by using it without one you would be breaking that rule at the very least?

They didn't test for steroids until the last CBA I think...it wasn't against the rules before then, even if it was illegal. There was probably something in the CBA that said if they got arrested for selling/dealing/possessing them they could face punishment, but without testing it wasn't against the rules, explicitly.

Google tells me 2003. That was earlier than I thought.

I like Koufax but overall GOAT? Nah. Overall GOAT has to be a position player 162 vs. 30ish, yaknowwhamsayin
