Thread: Exchange rates

  1. #1

    Default Exchange rates

This seems simple and probably is, I am just verifying...

I have a script reading from a xml file with exchange rates from EUR to other countries.

Right now it says USD is 1.1612, so exchange rate is .86.

I also need US to Canadian.

I know from the XML that is it 1 EUR = 1.4986 CAD.

Can I not simply do .86 * 1.4986 to get the USD to Canada?

I have done that multiplication and while it is almost to the penny it is not completely to the penny of conversion tools I am seeing online and I am not sure if I am being dumb here, or if it is simply maybe the data is just varied with the timing the tools have updated.

Thanks, I need to be able to read from a file and update a database in our system.

I found an xml file, http://www.ecb.europa.eu/stats/eurof...xref-daily.xml

That gives us the USD to EUR, so exchange rate is .86 USD for every 1 EUR.

My boss was pretty excited about this file and asked if I could find one just like it for Canadian, but I am thinking this has to be simple, I know how many USD = 1 EUR, and I know how many EUR = CAD, so I should be able to determine this from the information in this 1 file.

    1.1612 USD= 1 EUR.
    1 EUR = 1.4986 CAD.

.86 * 1.4986 = 1.288796 (.78 USD for 1 Canadian), but the online tool says 1.28342. Is my math wrong, or is some part of my information maybe not 100% up to date.

If the math is correct then I will just use this 1 file for my rates to both countries.

You can do that calculation and you'll be close, but I think you might be off pennies here and there because of the rounding to two decimal places on the US - EU exchange rate. If the CAD exchange rate was taken out to four decimal places why cut off the US - EU at two?

Rick, check this out, there is an online XML currency feed at this website:

    http://www.floatrates.com/feeds.html

It updates every twelve hours to make sure you have the most up to date XML file.

It will be .8612 for 4 places, however that makes the 1 USD = 1.2906 CAD, which is even higher than the online tool.

That website I linked above also has an XML table for Canadian. It has one for each currency. Might make your life a lot easier to have the right tables for each one rather than having to worry about multiple calculations.

Thanks, I will write up something to parse this, see what I can get from it, might make it easier.

That is a beautiful and sexy file, simple to parse and had everything I needed.

Have you used them for awhile, seem to be a stable on-going site?

Glad it worked for you! I've grabbed exchange rates from them in the past, but never with regularity. I used them for a few classes I had in college but nothing beyond that. I can say they have been operating for at least five years.

curious as to why? Selling things to multiple buyers?
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

Solar, etc? I've been considering doing solar on my roof, but I think the lease companies are a scam, the cost to purchase is rather high, and it seems that living in hurricane country this might be a bad idea all around.

Yes, though it is more about monitoring systems, they specialize in site studies, especially wind.
