Thread: By the Numbers: Week One

  1. #1

Default By the Numbers: Week One

I posted this over on the official boards, wanted to cross share it over here with you guys as well.

We had a narrow victory Monday against the Chargers. I wanted to start doing another rankings thread like this every week again, hopefully I'll have time to stick to it. Obviously, it's week one. We don't have enough of a sample size to determine where we really are, but it's a good starting point.

    Offensively

Total Yards: 15th with 321 yards
Rushing Yards: 5th with 140 yards.
Passing Yards: 19th with 181 yards

    Scoring: 9th with 24 points
    Touchdowns: 4th with 3
Rushing TD: 4th with 1 (Ts, you graceful gazelle you!)
    Passing TD: 5th with 2

    O-line
    Sacks: 23rd with 4
    QB hits: 26th with 8

    Defensively
Yards:9th with 249 (man, Jacksonville with that #1 defense!)
Rushing Yards: 10th with 64 yards.
    Rush YPC: 8th with 2.9
    Passing Yards: 13th with 185

    Scoring: 16th with 21 points
    Touchdowns: 19th with 3
Rushing TD: 1st (tie) with 0
    Passing TD: 27th with 3

Sacks: 18th with 1 (good lord the Jags with 10, man I wish we could have convinced Campbell to come here)
Tackles: 25th with 54 combined tackles.
    Interceptions: 5th with 1

Our Upcoming opponent the Dallas Cowboys
    Offensively
    Total Yards: 4th with 392
    Rushing Yards: 6th with 129
    Passing Yards: 10th with 263

    Scoring: 17th with 19 points
    Touchdowns: 21 with 1
    Rushing TD: 16th with 0
    Passing TD: 11th with 1

    O-line
    Sacks: 5th with 1
    QB hits: 8th with 3

    Defensively
    Yards: 24th with 233 yards
    Rushing Yards: 1 with 35
    Rush YPC: 8 with 2.9
    Passing Yards: 17th with 198

    Scoring: 2nd with 3 points
    Touchdowns: 1st with 0
    Rushing TD: 1st with 0
    Passing TD: 1st with 0

    Sacks: 10th with 3
    Tackles: 22nd with 55.

    Interceptions: 5th with 1

Obviously since only one game has been played, we have to take into account who the opponents were. We obviously faced a chargers team who has only won a handful of games the last two years. The may not be anywhere near as good of a team as the final score implies.

The Cowboys faced a pretty sloppy Giants team, that frankly struggled without OBJ out there. That could inflate some of their rankings, but we know from watching them last year, the Cowboys are a solid team. This is going to be a really good game for week two and could be a solid indicator for where we really are as a team.

By the way, if any of you have a PFF elite subscription, feel free to add any data you find helpful. I'll be starting these every week, but anyone who wants to contribute with useful statistics, please do so!

Something really interesting that was unearthed in another discussion regarding this graphic. Time to Throw (TT)
    Time To Throw (TT)
Time to Throw measures the average amount of time elapsed from the time of snap to throw on every pass attempt for a passer (sacks excluded).
    https://nextgenstats.nfl.com/stats/passing/2016/all

TS got rid of the ball this week in 2.4 seconds. Last season he had the third fastest release at 2.26 behind only Flacco at 2.18 and Carr at 2.04.

I found this really interesting because two years ago everyone's logic for why we should start Manning over Brock because as bad as our o-line was, he got the ball out of there faster.

The fact that TS gets the ball out that quickly and doesn't throw many INT's has me hopeful for the future. If he can get more accurate while keeping that quick release, he's going to be a every effective QB IMO.

"Elite" and "Pro Football Focus" don't belong in the same sentence.
Oh, valid point. I thought you meant all starters, you should take the time to be more descriptive, don't be shy. Jaded

My hope with these threads every week is to get people to add meaningful statistics they find. Kinda like a data dump of where we are as a team statistically. It'd be cool if someone had it, but if not, well, will find other cool stats to add.

Here are some stats from PFF Elite that I posted in a different thread (some assorted Siemian stats) the other day.

8th in deep passing yards with 73

Tied for first with 100% adjusted completion on deep throws of 20+ yards in the air (PFF considers ball to Sanders in endzone a drop, I'm mixed)

13th in adjusted completion % on all throws (above is just deep).

3rd in QB rating while under pressure at 122.9 (ironically above his overall rating for the game).

Tied for 3rd in sacks taken at 4

2nd in number % of plays that were play action, but 11th QB rating on play action 62.5 and 4th in yards per attempt on play action

2nd in QB rating on non play action passes at 110.8 and 9th in yards per attempt.

Here are some of the PFF elite numbers on our offensive line I posted in a different thread:

Here's some offensive (very offensive) stats from PFF:

    Watson:

3rd from the bottom in pass blocking efficiency 81.1%
3rd from the bottom in pressures allowed in 8 (on 37 pass plays)
Worst in the league with 4 sacks allowed (next worse is 2)

    Overall, the line was:

5th worst in pass blocking efficcency
Tied for 3rd worst in pressures (16 pressures in 37 pass plays)
Second worst with 5 sacks (must have changed a run to a sack at some point)
