Not the best quality, my first .gif and only had a few minutes, as I'm finishing up some work for tomorrow.

It could have gone either way depending on the ref, I agree with his though process that there is a yard or so of grace before it is PI instead of illegal contact or holding. I can see both sides of it honestly.

Both sides of it being an illegal play, or whether it's called PI or holding? Holding is five yards and PI spot, so holding is the better result. He grabs Fowler's jersey which first impedes his progress, then use it to pull himself to Fowler, then has his left arm draped over Fowler's left, preventing him from raising it.

Hard for me to not see that being a penalty, regardless of which one it needs to be by rule.

Curious about Spiker's analysis of this gif.

The .gif makes it easier for me, I have holding on the defense with a shirt stretch. Once the ball is in the air he's way too close to being back to the LOS to rule DPI, though he is still being held. VERY obvious hold though. The INT should not have counted.

I do want to point out that we're seeing multiple angles and in slow motion. It looks very obvious to us, but with his angle at real speed I'm sure it looked very different. He probably still should have gotten it, but I guarantee it wasn't as clear cut as it looks to us here. It's friggin difficult.

We don't play the Patriots until Week 10.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

It can't really be illegal contact because contact is legal within 5 yds of the LOS.

ARTICLE 2. ILLEGAL CONTACT WITHIN FIVE YARDS

Within the five-yard zone, if the player who receives the snap remains in the pocket with the ball, a defender may not make original contact in the back of a receiver, nor may he maintain contact after the receiver has moved beyond a point that is even with the defender.

Note: If a defender contacts a receiver within the five-yard zone of the line of scrimmage, loses contact, and then contacts him again within the five-yard zone, it is a foul for illegal contact.

    ARTICLE 6. DEFENSIVE HOLDING

It is defensive holding if a player grasps an eligible offensive player (or his jersey) with his hands, or extends an arm or arms to cut off or encircle him. See 12-1-6.
Penalty: For holding by the defense: Loss of five yards and automatic first down.

Note: Any offensive player who pretends to possess the ball, and/or one to whom a teammate pretends to give the ball, may be tackled until he crosses the line of scrimmage between the offensive tackles of a normal tight offensive line.
