Our solution is a chore chart where he can earn x amount of minutes for chores. 45 minutes for mowing the lawn, 10 minutes for feeding the dogs daily, etc. Works really well so far. He's eight and does his own laundry because of it. You need to know your kids currency, and right now for him it's video games. I feel bad because i used to waste hours playing games when I was his age, but only at night. I was too busy during the day with bikes and friends but when games got better it was easy to forgo exercise for them. Once he earns his time it's his time to use how he sees fit but only Friday through Sunday. It will change when he gets older but it works for now.

In Alberta it is written into the teachers contracts that they do not have to work a full two weeks at any point of the school year. There is at least one day off in the span of any two weeks but usually more. The Summer break starts the second week of June and ends the second week of September.

We've done this in the past as well. Whenever he does something worth rewarding we would give him a coupon for 30 minutes of screen time (and take one away if he misbehaves). We have gotten away from this over the summer, but it seemed to work quite well.

When you say day off you mean a weekday I assume? So they never have to work more than 9 days out of 14 days?

correct, that being said, teachers do alot of prepping, reading and grading of papers as well so it evens out. They get alot of time off but I sure wouldn't want to do it.
