Well apparently he suffered from massive depression stemming from being sexually abused as a child so yeah, I'd say too soon.

Linkin Park was a staple of every 20-something's early life. They were I think the first band I really got into. Burned out Hybrid Theory, played Meteora out too. Lots of memories listening to them. Then I grew up and left LP in the dust in favor of other musical tastes. Haven't listened to LP of my own accord in a long ass time.

Regardless, it's hard not to feel some sort of sadness about this. On a personal and selfish level because of their influence on my ever fading youth. And on a more important and realistic level, because of the circumstances surrounding the death - suicide, abuse, etc.

I remember always having HT/Meteora in my stereo while either playing Pokemon or playing Madden. I always thought his flame tattoos on his wrists were badass and wanted some like them. Thank God I grew out of that.

Never too soon, unless anyone knew him personally, anyone who takes offense to celebrity deaths and subsequent comments is an idiot.

I don't personally take offense. But for all any of us know, his kids could google him one day and read comments like this in their searches. I just never saw the point in ridiculing someone right after they die.

That's a fair criticism. Will I? Probably not. But there is something to the "time heals all wounds" cliche. People do get over tragic events the more time that passes, which doesn't necessarily make joking about that tragedy "right", but it also doesn't have the same sting as doing it the day after.

Yea, someone else on my facebook feed didnt like my comment either but like i told them ive been dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts for years. I just get annoyed when its all of a sudden such a big deal when it happens to be someone famous and all of a sudden people care. His shitty band aside so many people deal with this issue who arent rich and famous and yet no one ever bats an eye. Still waiting for Buff to come in and say what selfish coward he was for leaving his kids and wife behind.

There was already a thread about it that got deleted by the thread starter. You missed out on what you were waiting for. For what it's worth....it was a selfish act. You just don't do that when you have kids. The mental scars you're inflicting on them are leading them right down the same mental illness path you took your own life over.

Well, thats just it. Do we see mental illness as some kind of logical behavior or thinking? I said the same thing back then when Buff brought it up the first time and that its not as easy as saying you dont do that if you have kids. Personally, the pain of losing someone affects everyone in your life, not just the kids. But for those of us who deal with this kind of thing it isnt just a switch you can turn on and off and when the switch is turned on the darkness that envelopes you is severe and the logic of anything else going on isnt at the forefront. But by making the statement "it was a selfish act" you are then saying that the kids lives outweigh or are more important than Chester's which i disagree with whole heartily. Men, women, children should all be valued the same. Perhaps it was this attitude and lack of empathy that lead to Chester calling it a day.

It's a bit different in his case vs. the everyday Joe, he had the means to seek help. Perhaps it was him placing himself above all else and valuing his feelings over those of his loved ones that lead to him "calling it a day". I guess it's all part of perspective.

I am essentially arguing the exact opposite of what you're suggesting. The whole reason it's so selfish is that as a father of 6 - Chester's life arguably mattered MORE than all of his kids because there are so many people who were dependent on him.

The part of your argument (and the one Frey was making in his deleted thread) that I continue to disagree with is this idea that IF people don't excuse the action (suicide) based on mental illness - then somehow we are ignorant to the ravages of depression or can't possibly empathize with someone in his position.

Whereas there is a perfectly legitimate counterpoint that says - "We know a lot about mental illness, and there are many treatments available - you owe it to your family to exhaust all of those avenues."

Not a fan at all but it's a horrible story, dude leaves 6 kids behind who now have even more reason to have the same mental issues as their father.

I sort of peripherally liked Linkin Park. I think I owned that first big album of there's, but more recently I saw him taking over Scott Weiland in STP. It's sad that he died too young, younger than Weiland, too.
