Default Broncos expected to pick up Roby's fifth year option

KUSA - The Denver Broncos are expected to exercise the $8.526 million, fifth-year option on cornerback Bradley Roby, a high-ranking football source told 9NEWS.

The thinking is this: Roby is a good player and Broncos’ general manager John Elway wants to keep his good players.

Within the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement is a provision that gives teams a fifth-year contract option on their first-round draft picks. Roby was the Broncos’ first-round draft selection, No. 31 overall, in 2014.

Now in his fourth season, Roby is scheduled to make $1,368,072 this year. His $8.562 million fifth-year option for the 2018 season is expected to be exercised closer to the deadline date of May 3.

Should the Broncos enact the option year as expected on Roby’s contract, his $8.562 million salary would be guaranteed against injury only.

While $8.562 million is pricey for a No. 3 cornerback, Roby is considered one of the best No. 3 corners in the league as the Broncos have arguably the best starting tandem in Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr.

A.J. Bouye was the Houston Texans’ No. 3 cornerback for most of his four seasons with the team before he became a free agent last month and received a $13.5 million-a-year deal from Jacksonville.

Roby has demonstrated both durability and big-play ability in his first three seasons. He has played in all 52 games, counting the postseason, and has scored three defensive touchdowns – two off interception returns and another off a fumble return.

Good, I was hoping they'd do this. Yesterday Klis seemed to think there was some debate about whether it would happen. To me, you get to keep a good player for another year before we have to worry about long term contracts. No brainer for me on Roby.

Definitely a no-brainer. He's been a solid and reliable DB in a league where they are increasingly in demand. Elway's best 1st rounder not named Von.

I liked this really deep and complicated logic... "The thinking is this: Roby is a good player and Broncos’ general manager John Elway wants to keep his good players."

Plus Talib is a stray bullet away from injury. Allegedly.

With Roby and Simmons, we have some solid depth. And the safety. Parks?

Talib is so hood that he is unphased by offseason gunshot wounds.

We are considering moving Champ Bailey to safety I think.

Buff does it bug you that you are kind of bigoted towards Talib.

No because he's straight hood as they get and that's his brand. If I were calling Emmanuel Sanders hood or something that would be bigoted.

That's some deep reporting by Klis right there.

In a passing league these days nickle corners are a must and he can be put on an island while harris slides inside.

    But he shot himself.

Remember when Seattle killed us and Elway realized we didn't have an edge?

Thank you Aquib. He's our new Romo.

Obviously Talib has cemented himself as one of the top 3 to 5 CBs in football. Maybe even the best of them all. The guys on the roster love him and rely on him as a team leader on defense. The Broncos are paying him big money for a reason. Is he an idiot for constantly playing with guns? Yes. You want to slap him upside the head and say "get rid of the guns idiot!" They're not doing you any good.

But, are they getting rid of him. No.

They still need Roby to continue to develop though, because every team needs 3 good CBs these days. AT least 3 and possibly 4 if they could get them. The Broncos might well draft another CB in this draft to replace Kayvon Webster.

One more -- The Broncos officially exercised Bradley Roby's fifth-year option.
