None of this is to knock dt, he's one of my favorite current players, but you are selling ole rod way short.
Irvin is one of the best blocking WR's ever and has lower stats than he should. He's also one of the best playoff performers ever.
Rod Smith is demonstrably worse at football than DT. Imagine what the offenses would look like if they had swapped. Rod Smith was a very good player. He was not a great one, sans maybe one or two years.
I don't really think that has any impact on evaluations of them as players though. Like, did Smith have a better career than Irving compared to expectations based on draft position? Absolutely. But that doesn't make him a better player.
(Not necessarily saying who was better one way or the other, I just don't think draft position has anything to do with it)
Like, I'm not going to put Brady ahead of Manning because of where they were drafted. Brady probably has passed Manning now, but it has to do only with what they did on the field.
