Thread: California officer throws jaywalker to the ground and punches him in the face

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A California police officer seen on video hurling a jaywalker to the ground and repeatedly punching him in the face will be the subject of a criminal investigation, authorities said Tuesday.

The “disturbing” and unreasonable actions of the officer, a two-year veteran of the department, were not within policy, Sacramento police said in a statement.

The officer was already on unpaid administrative leave as a result of the incident and will now be subject to a criminal investigation.

The department also released a second video of the incident, shot from the officer’s dash camera at a much greater distance than the video shot by a bystander that circulated earlier Tuesday. The latest video has sound.

In the exchange on a residential street, the man says the officer stopped him “for nothing,” then says “if you were a real man, you would take your gun away and fight me like a real man.”

The officer then lunges at the man and tackles him, punching him repeatedly. Another officer joins the struggle soon after.

The article in the op says he told the officer to drop his gun and fight like a man. I don't know if that is a quote, but could probably be construed as a threat.

Note, not trying to justify the cops actions. But you have to be smarter than that.

He should apply for a security position with United airlines!

Broken windows policing at it's finest - minorities are stopped at a much higher rate for minor infractions. Some people just say that's 'the law' and others know better. The angst in minority populaces against cops is often that they are harassed for essentially nothing with great repetition. This has been verified by investigations via the Justice Department and data from a large swathe of scholarly sources.

The guy did take his jacket off, which can be construed as a threat. I didn't hear him say anything along the lines of 'fight' at all, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen, either. A guy who appears to be committing a minor crime ends up thrown to the ground (which could kill him) and punched repeatedly in the face (which could worse any wounds he got from being thrown, and also kill him) by a white officer. Nice optics.

Regardless, the cop's own police department says the actions were unreasonable. What a vile and cowardly act.
