There's really no need to overbook flights, unless it's a specific route that has a high percentage of no-shows due to non-restrictive tickets being sold. Those are rare these days...
I didn't read the article - where was the flight to and from?
Chicago to Louisville. But it really wasn't a overbooking, but rather United need 4 seats to fly United employees to Louisville. I think it was another flight crew.
