The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration held a press conference today announcing newly discovered Earth-sized planets orbiting a single star in the Trappist-1 system.

Three of the seven Earth-sized planets are found within the star's habitable zone, meaning liquid water, and even more amazingly, life, could exist on the planets' surfaces.

Based on what they have presented and what I was reading all day yesterday this is just an amazing discovery. I don't think it has really hit how big this is to some people. Many NASA scientists and others have pretty much concluded that it would be more surprising if there wasn't some form of life on those planets, especially those in the habitable zones. To me it is really cool and comforting in an odd way to think that there may be simple organisms or maybe even complex alien life on even one of those planets. I wonder how that planet's version of the Broncos are doing? Hopefully they have a good QB situation.

The James Webb telescope will be launched in 2018 and you bet your ass they will be pointing that baby at that star system ASAP to figure out things like atmospheric composition. I hope this discovery puts more funding back into NASA so we can at least attempt to get some sort of vessel there in the next 100 years or so.

Wow. This is huge. I'm really looking forward to the Webb telescope, it's going to be a bigger deal than Hubble was/is.

Sucks that we will never know the truth about alien life in our lifetime.

Maybe, but this puts the probability factor closer to 100% than ever.

Plus we just know there HAS to be something out there. So many galaxies there has to be at least a few planets in habitable zones. When we discovered organisms living in the Mariana Trench and in Volcanic Vents that changed the nature of habitable anyway. I'd be shocked if we really are alone in all of THIS:
