So, anyone that's never done a particular job can't aspire to higher levels? Didn't you just get promoted? Had you ever done that job before?

Default 49ers trying to copy Broncos and Elway with John Lynch hire?

John Lynch is a stunning hire for the 49ers.

Not only was Lynch not publicly affiliated with the search, but he’ll be getting an astounding six-year deal to replace Trent Baalke as general manager despite having no personnel experience.

And according to a report from Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, that was part of the appeal. The 49ers are trying to mimic what the Broncos did with John Elway when they made the former Super Bowl winning quarterback the GM and executive vice president of football operations in January 2011.

Elway had no prior front office experience before taking over in Denver. But he quickly became one of the most respected executives in the league and helped the Broncos reach the playoffs five straight seasons from 2011 to 2015. They won Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium nearly a year ago.

Give me his mailing address & I'll send him 1 via the USPS. Hopefully, it won't get crushed under someone's 200lb weight set that was just careless thrown in the truck.

No...He only owned the Crush, had a father that was a scout who he assisted with scouting and was a successful businessman in his own right... That article leaves out so many vital pieces of information all to make it seem like "if Elway can do it, Lynch can do it too"

No, but I had done the job below it which taught me valuable skills for the promotion. Lynch is going from never having worked in a front office in any capacity to being the head guy. I'm not saying he can't do it, but that's a tough jump to make.

I get what you're saying, and agree that it was somewhat of a shocking hire.

But... he's spent his life around football. I'm sure he's also spent a lot of time in the front office as a player and observer. He's also reported on the league since he retired.

It is a bit of a headscratcher, but not like it's completely out of left field.

I don't disagree with this. I don't mind a team taking a risk on a guy like this, but it's definitely a risk. Especially paired with a first time head coach. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I really like Lynch, so I hope he does well there.

Walt C. of walterfootball dishes out letter grades to free agency signings, A, B, C, F, etc., he gave this one JED YORK IS THE WORST OWNER OF ALL TIME Grade

    Kinda harsh.

That's what I keep thinking: One or the other, but not BOTH. A first-timer needs a veteran partner so when he comes up with something that looks good on paper but inevitably fails in practice there's someone to say, "I tried that at a, b and c and it doesn't work because x, y and z." As it is, they're BOTH flying blind, so I hope they have a better parachute than "Shanny on speed dial."

Seems like a nice guy, but it's hard to root for SF.
Oh, valid point. I thought you meant all starters, you should take the time to be more descriptive, don't be shy. Jaded
