That would mean he was good enough to keep, so yes. Not every first rounder gets his 5th year option picked up. Sylvester Williams did not and he's gone.
In reality though, they would only do that preliminary to signing him to an extended long-term deal. NO NFL team allows its starting LT to hit FA unless they don't care about keeping him.
i'll be happy with either of those scenarios. . . but he is going to be a bit of an interesting case if he does play well enough to earn an extension. . . linemen are playing well pretty late into their careers these days (we saw what whitworth just got), but can you give him the kind of second contract that you'd give to a younger guy without thinking about it? if we do pick up his extension, he'll be 30 before the end of his rookie deal IIRC. . . guess we've got a while to go before it becomes important, but it is an interesting detail. . .
rest - https://www.profootballrumors.com/20...-gary-barnidgeGary Barnidge left his early May visit with the Bills without a contract and roughly three weeks later he remains on the open market. Things could be picking up for the tight end, however. Barnidge tells SiriusXM (Twitter link) that he has heard from some of his old coaches that are now with the Broncos.
The Broncos added a big name at tight end when they selected Michigan’s Jake Butt in the fifth round. However, he has torn an ACL in each knee with the latest one happening during the Orange Bowl this past January. While Butt recuperates, the Broncos project to go into September with Virgil Green, Jeff Heuerman, and A.J. Derby as their top three tight ends. Barnidge could be added to the mix to help push Derby and/or Henry Krieger-Coble for the final TE spot on the 53-man roster.

THIS ONES FOR JOHNWOULD YOU RATHER WIN UGLY, OR LOSE PRETTY?
do it. . . a competent veteran pass catcher would he a huge help to either TS or paxton. . .
I hope they dont sign him, he looks big and slow. Doesn't look like an upgrade over green, huerrman or darby.
He does have good hands though. ILL give him that.
I'm just hoping jake butt gets healthy and in tune sooner than later. Also think huerrman is going to suprise. I think him and jake butt are the same guy's. So having two of them will be awesome when we want to line up in 2 TE set's on the line and it's a threat running and passing.
Huerrman has not given much indication that he will be good. Butt is going to be a long ways from being alright this year - he'll get on the field eventually.
We could use the stopgap help, and we know that this guy can catch. That's much better than those guys, and the POS that is Green.
Huerrman and jake butt style of play was identical in college. Both guys who can mix it up in the run game and make a impact as receiving threats. Charles Davis loves huerrman and butt. He believes we have two good young tight ends and I agree. The only thing that stopped huerrman was grtting injured and missing the entire rookie season and then he spent the next year trying to rehab, play, learn the game. Now it's year 3, he's fully healthy and I think hell show what he's got. I expect huerrman to catch about 40 passes this year and be a key contributor in the run game blocking.
