Default JJ Watt goes on IR, may miss rest of season

Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt might be out for the season after injuring his surgically-repaired back again and will be placed on injured reserve due to another disk injury, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly.

The Texans haven't made a roster move yet involving the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, but will do so and are signing veteran defensive end Antonio Smith to a one-year contract to provide depth and experience.

Watt will see a specialist for his back. It's unclear currently if he'll need to have another surgical procedure to address this latest problem with his back. There is some small hope Watt could return later in the season depending on the final diagnosis of his back injury.

Watt underwent a microdiscectomy procedure in late July to repair a herniated disk, missing the entire preseason before being activated from the physically unable to perform list to the active roster. He started and played the majority of the defensive snaps in each of the Texans' first three games

Game changer in the AFC South. Looks like the Texans have to ride Brock to victory this year.

I thought Brock said going to the Texans gave him the best chance to win now?

Lesson learned here my dudes. The best deals are the deals that never happen. Brock is a bum and Trevor is a G.

Damn. That sucks for Watt. I hate to see players go on IR during their prime playing years. His career may be done.

It's unfortunate because he will be considered to be an all-time great. With that being said, he was already talking about retiring.

This only helps Von Miller's case for DPOY.

Man, that really sucks. JJ Watt is a great player. Losing playing time is the least of it, these type of injuries and surgeries will stick with him and cause him pain for the rest of his life. Really sucks.

Love me some JJ Watt. No homo, but he is such a great player and by all accounts, person. This sucks, and I wish him a quick, full recovery.

Should have stayed away from Papa John's. It's a career-killer.

As a fan I appreciate his willingness to play injured - but wonder if that's going to shorten his career now.

Sucks for everyone but Antonio Smith. I hadn't heard Watt's considering retirement. Arguably the best defender in the game, maybe done after just FIVE full seasons.

I hate to go there, but if players and owners alike are greedy entitled SOBs, the differences are that Bob McNair 1) ANNUALLY makes about an order of magnitude more money off the Texans than JJ Watt will in his CAREER, 2) has already been collecting that income 3X longer than Watt's played and 3) won't face constant pain and impairment the rest of his life due to injuries sustained in the process.

I wish Watt a full speedy recovery, but am realistic enough to realize a FULL recovery's unlikely, now or ever. I wouldn't blame him if he quit while he's... whatever he's considered to be now.

Oh, valid point. I thought you meant all starters, you should take the time to be more descriptive, don't be shy. Jaded
