Wow. Bob Stoops is stepping down.

If the Sooners and Longhorns both turn into also-rans, I think will be the time the league breaks up and we see the four SuperConferences (SEC, Big 10, PAC and ACC) form. If it happens, look for OU, OSU, Texas and Texas Tech to be absorbed into the PAC with the few open spots left (2 in SEC, 2 in Big 10, 1 in ACC) going quickly. Schools like Kansas, Baylor and TCU may have to step back.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

Why did Stoops pick now to walk away? Seems oddly timed.

Cue the NCAA announcing their investigation on far reaching violations next month.

The speculation is that he did it because he wanted the kid to be coach.

doesn't that go against every fiber of competitiveness that goes with the head coach position?

I suppose there could be an argument made for that. But at the same time, if this is true, then we'd have to look at it through the prism of Stoops' mindset. If he's dead set on stepping down and truly wants his hand-picked coach in waiting to take the job (and I'm certainly implying hubris here) in Lincoln Riley (I finally remembered his name), then I think we can also say doing this is a competitive, ego-driven move.

Then, the problem with the above theory is always boosters. What was the pressure from the Boosters. Did they want him out or was this really a decision he made on his own.

For another example of this you can look at Bo Ryan stepping down so his longtime assistant could coach out the season. It ended quite well, in that case.

Mac got off with a slap on the wrist and fat contract extension. Some expect him to Big Time CU the first chance he gets for "the way he was treated", because the buyout is pretty low.
