The illustration of the proposed new Raiders stadium in Vegas isn't evil enough. It needs to look like a Death Star.

Other than that, I'm totally in favor of the move. I think it is a plus for the entire AFC West to have them there, both logistically (LV is closer to SD, Denver and KC geographically and cheap flights are plentiful) and socially (the city cares about its image enough not to let it turn into a ghetto). An eventual Super Bowl in Vegas sounds far more possible than an eventual Super Bowl in Oakland or Sacramento.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

According to all the locals I talked to when I was in Vegas, the stadium is no longer being planned for that spot (Bali Hai golf course). The plan is to place it on a baron spot of land right off the freeway very close to the airport, which would be right behind the casinos on the strip. The tiered parking structure would go on the other side of the main artery off the freeway. It was a big area, they could do a lot with it. If it is anything like the new basketball/hockey stadium, it will be done right... that stadium is nice.

The hockey arena is already done? What basketball games will they have?

Collegiate, and all star games. It's also a central location for the mountain west tournament and a good site for NCAA tournament

I'm still somewhat surprised the same NFL that used to suspend star players for gambling—and not even on FOOTBALL—approved a teams relocation to the gambling capitol of the US, if not the world. I guess if transparent efforts to move the Jags to London and Bucs to Manchester fail, they can move to Monte Carlo and St. Moritz.

They haven't approved it yet. A vote of the owners still needs to be made but Goodell said he won't oppose it and many other owners take his cue. Plus, any remaining hate for Al Davis has not filtered down to his son.

I think it more accurate to say Goodell takes his cue from the bulk of the owners: Because he's ultimately neither more nor less than their figurehead (or lightning rod.) Which probably explains the change: Maybe Bert Bell and Pete Rozelle NEVER tolerated even a whiff of gamblings association with their pristine league, but Goodell doesn't have the kind of innate authority to argue the point, whether or not he'd like to do so.

Frankly, NFL culture's generally and radically changed since those days, largely due to Bell and Rozelles success in making it what it is now. In the '50s "Golden Age of Pro Football" (which were more accurately the BIRTH of its modern popularity) most owners could still recall the days when they were player-coach-owners routinely forced to schedule extra games at the end of the season just to make payroll for players who still needed full time regular jobs. Now it's a gentlemans country club with a billion-dollar buy-in, so it's all about brie and wine-filled luxury skyboxes in gaudy billion-dollar convention centers at the expense of local taxpayers.

But, but, but the players say they are treated like SLAVES and refuse to stand at attention during the national anthem because of the injustice of it all...

Yes, as one person said "you can't lose money as an NFL owner". The TV dollars and the salary cap guarantee a profit. The question of most owners is whether they want to spend extra to actually *try* to win anything.

I think the pre-60s owners remember how baseball almost collapsed from gambling scandals and college basketball was still plagued by point-shaving. That's ancient history to today's owners who think it can't happen to them.

Hoof. Did Bob Chody win his race for Sheriff for one of the counties Austin is in?

There is gambling everywhere, this is not a big deal. BTW, it's not even close to the gambling capital of the world. Macau is the epitome of a gambling mecca

Austin's only in a single county, but the Statesman says Chody did win the Williamson Co. sheriff race. It's SO awesome living in a place so partisan that whoever wins the lone primary wins the election by default, because the other major party doesn't even waste time fielding a whipping b—er, "candidate."

Thanks for the heads up though, because I'd never heard of the guy before you mentioned him. Sounds like he's in the finest tradition of WilCo sheriffs: After beating a HS kid so badly it caused a seizure and then arresting him for... no reason but the sheer joy of beating up and arresting teenagers, he got served with a lawsuit, but winning the lottery quickly solved his problems. So now he's got a burgeoning political career running Police Lives Matter rallies and the WilCo sheriffs dept.

He's not as good as the sheriff local cops picked up and drove home after finding him drunk and pissing by the side of the road (twice,) but he's right up there.
