What's The First Big News Story You Were Aware Of As A Kid?

I was too young to know about the OKC bombing, so the first news story I really remember is 9/11. 2nd grade.

Not sure if football is considered news or not, but I remember the Broncos/Packers SB, so if that counts that's my earliest.

Elvis dying. I think I was six at the time.

A few months later, the Broncos beat the raiders in the AFC championship game to make their first super bowl.

My two earliest memories of news stories were the death of Elvis Presley and the dumpster fire that was the Jimmy Carter presidency.

First one that comes to mind is the landing on the moon. July 20, 1969. I remember watching it, but also being pissed because that was my cousins birthday. Mine was 5 days earlier - we were born the same year and grew up together. I was 7.

Probably princess Diana's death I guess? Don't remember the exact year that happened but I can't have been older than 8 or 9.

Also, it's crazy to me that there are people now who don't remember/barely remember 9/11. Really doesn't feel like it's been THAT long.

I wonder how I would've remembered it today if I wasn't a New Yorker. To me it will always feel like yesterday.

As for my first big news stories that I remember, the Iran hostages being freed & Reagan getting shot were the first that came to mind.
