Default Did Dikembe Mutombo reveal that the NBA Draft lottery is rigged?

With a single tweet, Hall of Fame big man Dikembe Mutombo might have exposed a multiple-decade conspiracy that the NBA has perpetuated on the sport-loving public.

    Or he didn't.

One or the other. It's probably the latter.

Regardless of whether he did or didn't, Mutombo certainly added some additional intrigue to an already fascinating NBA Draft lottery when the former Nuggets, Hawks, and 76ers big man tweeted Tuesday afternoon "Congrats to @Sixers on grabbing the first pick in the #NBADraft."

This is all the evidence you would ever need to prove the long-held conspiracy theory that the lottery is rigged and the NBA is rewarding the 76ers for firing subversive GM Sam Hinkie.

Or not. Again, this could go either way.

So don't think anything of Mutombo admitting he got confused in a follow-up tweet. The NBA forced him to send that out after they found out he pulled back the curtain on the entire operation.

Default Dikembe Mutombo has a perfectly reasonable explanation for his premature lottery tweet

It took less than a minute for Dikembe Mutombo to realize he had done something horribly wrong after he tweeted a premature congratulations to his former team for winning the NBA draft lottery.

“Congrats to @Sixers on grabbing the #1 spot in the #NBADraft,” he tweeted hours before the 76ers actually won the lottery,

It was a tweet that had been suggested in an email, which Mutombo forwarded to For The Win, sent from a team staffer in the event that the team did win the lottery.

“As you know tonight is the NBA Draft Lottery and we are all excited and hopeful we walk away with the #1 overall pick,” the email read. “To help create excitement for the team, would it be possible for you (or whoever controls your account) to post a congratulatory tweet in the event we do get the #1 Overall Pick? I know you have ties to many teams, but none of which would be in the running for the #1 pick this year.”

There were sample tweets provided, along with a suggestion to just retweet the 76ers account.

Mutombo said he was busy and didn’t read the email carefully, but wanted to be supportive so he posted the tweet. When he realized his mistake minutes later, he immediately took it down. “Sorry, guys,” he tweeted. “Got excited about the @sixers odds and got ahead of myself.Still keeping my fingers crossed for tonight.”

So when fans argue the tweet is proof the draft is rigged?

“People will say whatever they want to say,” he said on Tuesday night. “… You cannot stop them.”

Well OK - supposedly the email sent to Dikembe stated - "I know you have ties to many teams, but none of which would be in the running for the #1 pick this year.” Let's see - Coach Malone was there representing the Nuggets - the organization who drafted Dikembe, and one of the organizations that he played for the most years - 5, BUT, they would not be in the running for the #1 pick this year???????

    basketball sucks
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

It's amazing how quickly everyone wants to believe in conspiracies. I guess it's this desire, or fascination, to believe in pre-destination.

Haven't they had the #1 multiple times in recent history?

This year should be perfect proof that the lottery isn't rigged. With LA and Boston in the top 3, why would the NBA give Philly the top pick over either of them?

Not the number one overall, but their GM, who was fired this year purposely tanked for the last four or five years. They've drafted Jhalil Okafor and Joel Embiid and traded for Nerlens Noel. Embiid hasn't even played yet because of a bum foot. They also drafted Elfrid Payton and Michael Carter-Williams in the lottery and traded both away.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

The theory goes: it's a reward for firing the dufus who was tanking (i can't think of his name right now) and to try to make them competitive.

I see. Even still, if we are going with the premise that the NBA rigs the lottery, I think the NBA would much rather infuse talent into LA and Boston than to reward Philly for firing Hinkie.

Never fear, L.A. will get Ingram and he's going to be a stud. Boston had the Nets pick, so they'll get a nice piece to plug into an already talented, well-coached team.

Simmons actually probably fits in quite well in Philadelphia.
