    The cages are for their own protection Dave. Chickens are easy targets for hawks, cats, etc., and that's just if you live in the city. You can let them run around the yard for a while, but you have to put them back in the coup before dark, or they'll be eaten. During the day they'll probably go back in the coup if they see a hawk
