Default Brandon Marshall - 2nd round tender

Brandon Marshall received a 2nd round tender.
Troy Renck's Twitter: #Broncos will place 2nd round tender on ILB restricted free agent Brandon Marshall. #Dolphins, #Seahawks among those could be interested
The Broncos will be on the hook for a little over $2 million next season.
However, another team can and probably will sign him to a big deal. I highly doubt Denver will-or could match the contract.

Denver likes Corey Nelson and Todd Davis, which could be their starting tandem at ILB.

I'm kind of wondering if they are ok with getting another 2nd round pick in case they need it to acquire a certain 49er QB...in case Oz gets lured away.

    Thoughts....

The 2nd round pick would be in next year's draft.

I disagree, it is in the upcoming draft-I haven't found that teams have to wait a year.

Any chance that maybe you're thinking of Compensatory picks?

It's my understanding that 2nd round tender means getting a 2nd round compensatory the following season. The only way we get another 2nd this year is for a team to trade their actual 2nd rounder for this year to us.

In this year's draft, we get that team's second round pick if they sign him. Any team that wants him must pay at least 2 million and give us their second round pick.

At least that's my understanding and how it's explained on wiki

Very underrated player on our defense. I would like to see us lock this guy up long term.

No, then Elway uses it and trades up to about 21st overall, then trades the 21st and next year's first round pick to jump to 11th overall and takes Paxton Lynch! Kaepernick wants to be a Jet, but B. Marshall said no thank you, they have a quarterback...I understand the feeling...No thanks.

It's definitely not a compensatory pick, but instead the team signing has to give up the pick. Since the deadline for restricted free agents to sign their offer sheets is the week before the draft, it makes sense it would be this year's pick.

I would have done a first but that's just me.
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

As I said in the other thread, I would have liked to have seen a first round tender, because it would have kept teams away. Then again, it's still very unusual for someone to be poached at a second round tender. We tendered Chris Harris at a second round level two years ago, and that worked out for us. Hopefully it's the same situation here.

Most teams don't sniff around a 2nd round tender anyways. But broncos have right to match any offer as well.

Regardless of the tender we have the right to match an offer. The difference is the higher the tender the higher the minimum contract for the player. Had we tendered him with a first there's less chance of another team making an offer, but we also have to pay him more. I think a second rounder is appropriate tender. Definitely high enough that another team will have to REALLY want him in order to pay him more than we're willing to match AND give us their second round pick.

Yeah, I'm just worried that if some team comes in with a big offer, it will hinder our cap situation. But like you said, it's rare that a team comes calling at this level anyway, so it might all work out as it is.
