My buddy had a great quote tonight. "Those poor Panthers fans flew all the way from Seattle to be disappointed."
I agree with Cam! I've always thought that the NFL's "excessive celebration" penalties were absolutely absurd and should be abolished immediately.
It goes back to the Cowboys getting mad because some teams were dancing on the Star at midfield when they scored a TD. The NFL rushed in to ban choreographed routines with teammates, the use of "props" and everything else a player might do to celebrate.
It just looks like this:
"Back in my day players didn't celebrate! They just handed the ball to the ref and put their leather helmets back on and played on the defense too! Times were tough! You had to ride your mule to the stadium through 3 foot snow drifts, uphill both ways!"
Oh, it certainly does not: It goes back at LEAST a decade before TO delaying games to run 50 yds to slam a TD ball down on the Texas Stadium star (later answered by Emmitt, and finally put a stop to for good when George Teague slammed OWENS down on the star the next time he tried that crap.) Planting crap in the end zone pre-game just to hot dog and incite a onfield brawl made it all WORSE, but the NFL had already stepped in to REIN it in by the late '80s.
The NFL didn't say a darned thing to Cam either (unless "Congratulations, Mr. 2015 League MVP" counts.) Fans and media said it all the same way they called him out for hiding and sulking under his towel his whole rookie year because his team kept losing (imagine that, the team with the #1 overall pick sucks.) Then they built a decent roster again and the guy who hid from cameras every time he lost sought out ANY and ALL cameras every time he won—until he lost; then he ran away again.
I'll give Cam props for defending his actions by quoting Lombardis "Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser." But the only way to get away with that is how Lombardi did: NEVER LOSE. If you DO lose, especially in a SB, expect every bit as much camera time as you hogged winning: Like it or not. And if you handle with the same gracelessness that reminded people winning NFL games was a novelty for you, expect to be called out for the same reason.
Oh, valid point. I thought you meant all starters, you should take the time to be more descriptive, don't be shy. —Jaded
