Alan Rickman, the British stage and screen actor whose distinct voice and features were the basis for formidable characters, died on Thursday morning. He was 69.

A spokesman for the London-based Independent Talent Group confirmed his death. A family statement published by the BBC said that the cause of death was cancer. “He was surrounded by family and friends,” the statement said.

The London-born Mr. Rickman had an acting career that lasted over three decades, and first became known to American audiences with a captivatingstage breakthrough in New York in 1987, as the ruthless Valmont, a character fatally at war with his true feelings, in Christopher Hampton’s “Liaisons Dangereuses.”

He and Bowie were the same age. They also seem to die in threes. Someone else will be gone soon.

Rickman was a great actor. Loved a lot of his work.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

I remember him from Robin Hood, the Harry Potter films, and Die Hard. He was a wonderful actor.
