LinkedIn is like Facebook for professionals and serves as a way of networking which can be useful if you are job-hunting. If you love your job and never intend to leave it, no need to bother unless you're just the social butterfly.
I have had job recruitment counselors tell me that, nowadays, if you don't have a social media presence (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) then they may conclude you are anti-social or have something to hide. But be smart about them - no jokes about overthrowing the government, starting a jihad or posting nude/drunk pictures of yourself. Employers WILL look for you on these but you can also check businesses out at places like glassdoor.com to find out if they are cheap, greedy SOBs that exist only to steal your soul. Two-way street.
