Default YOUR Best Movies of 2015

Time to sit back and reflect what turned out to be a pretty great year at the movies. For once I was underwhelmed by the Summer movies and really dug the offerings the rest of the year. I haven't seen all the films I wanted to yet, but at this point they can be in next years list. I'm going to go with my top 5 in regular movies and then with Independent Films, looking forward to see what other people think as well:

My Top 5 Regular Feature Films of 2015

    5. Inside Out - Another Pixar classic and one of the best family movies I've seen this year. I loved The Good Dinosaur as well, but this movie edged it out because I really think it helped illustrate just how basic (and therefore complicated) our emotions can be. It reminded me of how simple things used to be when I was a kid and in a weird way made me take a step back and realize that my son experienced life in a very different way than I do now. It took on some very serious subjects like loss, anxiety, and even depression and made the audience look at itself from the Inside Out (see what I did there) in a whole new way.

    4. Creed - The most surprising film of the year to me. Michael B. Jordan is great as a kid who grew up fighting and learns to focus his anger and his hurt. Stallone puts in the performance of his career in many ways in a very quiet yet powerful role. Director Ryan Cooler (check out Fruitvale Station if you haven't already) took what could have been a nostalgic cash-in and made an honest to God great movie about fighting in both the literal and emotional sense.

    3. Spectre - This was a divisive movie between my friends and I, but I liked it more than Quantum of Solace but less than Casino Royale which makes it the second best Bond movie of the Daniel Craig era to me (Skyfall being my personal favorite). It was a bit too long at the end for my tastes, but the movie never wore out its welcome. It was like taking a long walk with an old friend who just happens to kill people.

    2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - I debated putting this movie on my list because it basically hit all the right buttons like it was scientifically marketed to do so. Because it was. But damn I can't deny how much fun I had with this movie. Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and John Boyega are wonderful additions to the cast but it was really Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) that stole the show for me. I have loved this series since I was a kid watching Return of the Jedi in the theater and while this movie isn't my favorite of the saga, it is a wonderful launchpad moving forward. I really want to see some new ideas in the next film to keep the momentum going however.

    1. Mad Max: Fury Road - I already have Creed and Star Wars in my list, whats one more Reboot-quel™? The difference with Mad Max though is that THIS movie came out of nowhere to knock me on my ass. I was always a casual Mad Max fan but this put the other films to shame while still paying homage to them. Creed was a handoff to a new generation, The Force Awakens was a reminder of why we all loved Star Wars, but Fury Road was George Miller telling us he still had something to say and dammit you will listen! The story drove the action, the characters had motivation, and the whole thing looked like a fever dream of a dying man in a post-apocalyptic outback desert. Visually stunning and engaging from the first to the last frame.

My Top 5 Independent Films of 2015

    5. What We Do in the Shadows - A very dark comedy about Vampires, but really its an analogy about getting old and reconciling that you have no idea how the world of the young works after a certain age. It was a strange movie that made me laugh more than I should have, but I have a screwed up sense of humor. Never thought I'd see an art house comedy about Vampires, but here we are. Great flick!

    4. Room - This story about a woman who was kidnapped as a teenager and lives in a room with her son feels like two films in one. The first hour or so is heartbreaking as the mother (Brie Larson) tries to explain to her young son why they have never left the house, let alone the room they are forced to live in by "Old Nick". The film closes out into a very dreary and draining second half but one that keeps you engaged the entire time. I would be shocked if Allison Brie does not get nominated for her performance here

    3. Spotlight - Much like Room, Spotlight takes a very heavy subject matter and weaves an incredible tale of how far some people go to hide secrets as well as to uncover them. This movie focused on the Boston Globe reporters who uncovered the Catholic Churches attempts to cover up their issues with child molestation. Liv Schrieber and Michael Keaton pulls the audience along through this uncomfortable journey to bring this story to light with great performances.

    2. Ex Machina - The most recognized sci-fi movie Domhall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac are in this year was Star Wars, but the best is this one. Gleeson plays an employee of Isaac's software company who wins a one week visit with the CEO. There he meets a remarkable AI robot named Ava. Soon the CEO wants the "lucky" employee to test her to see how human she appears. This movie deals with the concepts of being human and what makes intelligence special in a way that good science fiction always does. Ava begins to manipulate Gleeson's character very early on after she learns what happens to the other robots that have failed the test. The rest plays out like a morality tale meets horror film and is one of the most unique and engaging dramas I've seen in years.

    1. Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl - Saw this movie once in the theater and twice now after buying it and it wrecks me each time. Every once in awhile we find a movie that cuts a little too close to us with a character or story and makes you engage with the film in a way that all great art should. This movie was funny, introspective, and full of heart. This film tells the story of a young man who won't let anyone close to him, and to survive the jungle of high school life he simply becomes a partial citizen of all the cliques so that he can be invisible. When he is forced to have a real relationship he discovers that you never stop learning about the people in your life as long as you keep your eyes and your heart open.

I still have yet to see The Revenant, Anomalisa, or the Hateful 8 but I know they may bump some of this list around. Overall I think this was a great year at the movies.

    4. Creed
    5. Straight Outta Compton
    6. The Final Girls
    7. Sicario
    8. Minions
    9. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
    10. In the Heart of the Sea

Good list. After seeing the Revenant last weekend I would put that in my top 3 now.
