He had the foresight to trade Cutler.
Yeah, he lost the next year, but keeping Cutler would have put this franchise in, what I like to call, Nuggets with Karl land. Good enough to win 7 or 8 games, not good enough to do anything. Say, like win four straight division titles and win an AFC Championship, despite everyone hating the last four years.
