    Default Polamalu retires

Troy Polamalu called Dan Rooney last night to inform him he was retiring from football.

The Steelers had asked Polamalu to retire in February, but he resisted until the realization came upon him in church this week, the Holy Week of the Greek Orthodox Church.

“It’s all about family,” said Polamalu in a phone interview. “I live here in Pittsburgh now, and since the end of the season I’ve had a chance to enjoy my family on a level I never had before. It was awesome.”

Polamalu retires after 12 seasons, in which the eight-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro played in 158 regular-season games, 15 playoff games and three Super Bowls. In those games, the Steelers’ strong safety made 710 tackles, intercepted 35 passes, forced 13 fumbles, recovered seven fumbles, scored four touchdowns and won two championships.

I saw an article yesterday suggesting he was leaning towards retirement. It shouldn't come as a surprise considering the way he played. That dude threw his body around like he was pinball in pinball machine.

He was the best SS in the league during his prime.

2 SBs and 8 PBs and he'll probably be a first ballot HOFer. Steve Atwater, 2 SBs 9 PBs and he'll probably have to wait til the veterans committee if ever to get into the HOF.

I know I'm getting older when the guys who were in college while I went start to retire. I watched USC play CU during the Polamalu/Carson Palmer era and he remains one of the best college players I ever saw live.

The Steelers have announced they will be retiring his hair in their Ring of Honor.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

Was my favorite Non-Broncos player for a long time, everything that's right about football.

Surely a basterd coated basterd with bits of basterd inside like yourself cannot condone that hair?

I never realised Atwater had 9 PB's - seems strange that we he was so bitter on here and ended up getting banned - If i had 9 PBs and 2 rings i would be much more mellow in retirement.........

There was a discussion on Dan Patrick about the announcement and HOF/great safeties - Lynch, Ed Reed, etc. Atwater was never mentioned. People just forget about him.

Then.. Peyton Manning will have a easy game against Steelers' defensive backs.
