That said, Cowherd made a decent point, that if you are the player and the team wants to delay you an additional year from getting paid (even if its fully within their rights), wouldn't it be hard to not then hold that against them when it's time for your next contract?

Boras clients tend to hit free agency no matter what, and organizations know that so the player isn't really gaining any leverage.
