Seems like the one tackle the Broncos are ignoring is Jake Fisher. I wonder if Elway is planning to do the same with him that he did with Roby last year. No contact until the pick is in.

Know what the Broncos need? I mean, really need.

    Another Pot Roast.

Check that. A Pot Roast who can run. Auburn defensive tackle Angelo Blackson has the measurables to be a nice nose tackle in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defense.

Blackson is 6-foot-4, 318 pounds — lighter than Terrance “Pot Roast Knighton by 20 pounds or so. And the mocksters aren’t giving Blackson any love because he’s mostly projected as final round-to-premium undrafted free agent.

But at his Pro Day, Blackson had 40-yard times of 4.99 and 5.01 seconds. Eye-popping speed considering quarterback Jameis Winston ran a 4.97 at the NFL scouting combine. It opened the Broncos’ eyes enough to bring Blackson into Dove Valley for a visit this week.

Phillips, the Broncos’ new (and former) defensive coordinator, wants more speed on his defense. More speed up front. Phillips knows how altitude negatively affects the visitors — especially for those big heavies.

For the past six weeks or so, I’ve projected the Broncos taking a right tackle with their first-round draft pick, No. 28 overall.

Broncos general manager John Elway has said — and is likely to reiterate during his predraft press conference Thursday — that he will select the best player available.

Two players who visited with the Broncos in recent weeks — Oklahoma’s enormous defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and Florida’s nimble, athletic offensive tackle D.J. Humphries — offer the combined theory that the Broncos will give serious consideration to the available offensive tackles, but will shift to another position of need if that player has a higher grade.

The Broncos do need a stout a nose tackle-type who can fill the middle in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defensive system. Phillips is large at 6-foot-5, 329 pounds — and considering he declared for the draft after his redshirt sophomore season at Oklahoma, he will likely get even bigger.

In his two upperclassmen high school seasons, Phillips had 32 catches for 538 yards and six touchdowns and also averaged nearly 37 yards a punt. So he’s also an athlete.

Humphries is a tad light as top-round offensive tackles go at 6-foot-5, 307 pounds, but he is quick and athletic, the type of edge blocker who would fit well in the Broncos’ zone-blocking system that will be coached by Gary Kubiak, Rick Dennison and Clancy Barone.

The Broncos are visiting today with Missouri receiver Bud Sasser.

Although projected as a seventh round/premium undrafted free agent, Sasser has some impressive numbers. Start with his size — he is 6-2 1/2, 219 pounds.

Sasser also had a breakout redshirt senior season at Missouri, recording 77 receptions for 1,003 yards and 12 touchdowns.

He also follows the Broncos’ trend of visiting with “diamond-in-the-rough” prospects, especially at receiver. The Broncos have also visited with receivers Tre McBride of William & Mary and Michigan State’s Keith Mumphery. McBride is projected as a mid-round type with Mumphrey hoping to get drafted in the sixth or seventh.

Jordan Phillips would be an outstanding 3-4 DE in Wade's system but he also has suffered back problems and it would suck to invest so much in a player only to have him sit (or retire early) with a bad back.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

I dont know that I would put a 330 pound pure nose tackle at DE in this system. The guy is a straight interior player with basically NO experience in the 5 tech.

At 28, pretty much every player is a boom or bust candidate, so there are going to be injury, performance and off-field concerns about pretty much ANY player taken there and after. Just a matter of due diligence on the part of the scouting department.

That's a 6 week recovery. He'd still be ready for training camp.
