Default Dennis Allen, New Orleans Saints expected to reunite

Former Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen is returning to New Orleans, where he won a Super Bowl as Sean Payton's secondary coach in February of 2010.

Allen is expected to rejoin Payton's staff as a senior defensive assistant, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday morning, via a source informed of the team's plans.

It's an interesting hire because Allen used his postseason success as a springboard to the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator job in 2011. If Rob Ryan turns in a second consecutive disappointing season, Payton could be tempted to turn to Allen as his new defensive boss.

That's gonna be an awkward setup, Ryan knowing that his potential replacement is breathing down his neck if the D struggles under his watch again.

The fact that he didn't have any offers to be a DC is sort of surprising and would indicate that his spectacular failure in Oakland hurt his stock pretty badly.

Which is strange, because I wouldn't think teams would hold it against a guy for failing somewhere where pretty much everyone fails.

Right - which indicates that he sucked more than usual. Got in way over his head and was exposed Rahim Morris style.

I thought he did a great job in Denver as a DC.

I don't get it why he wasn't on Denver's shortlist.

Apparently he burned his bridges on the way out.
