rest - http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...hans-interviewMike Shanahan was greeted by an NFL coaching legend during his sit-down with the Oakland Raiders.
According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday, John Madden sat in on Shanahan's interview in the Bay Area over the weekend, per two sources. The 78-year-old, who coached the Raiders from 1969 to 1978, has had an unclear role in the team's hiring process thus far.
Madden could possibly be looked at as an advisor, or someone who made Shanahan feel welcome in a place that has created some hostility for Shanahan over the years.

Mike Shanahan obviously in the mix for one of these coaching gigs. He doesn't expect things to shake out until after the playoffs.

He'll be working in Chicago next year with Cutler. He gets his toy from the draft back. ANd Kyle will be coming along to be OC...It's all in the works.!!!! Shanny and Cutler reunited!!
BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE
go home, shanny, you're drunk!
and painfully desparate. . . i SO hope this happens! only thing better would be the fade hiring mcdaniels. . .

The last chunk of Shanahan's career he has been 'Marvin Lewis good'.![]()
He didn't blow it in 97 and 98. Shanny did and outstanding job in Denver. I will always love the guy for the championships he helped bring to Denver. A lot of us had to suffer through 3 grueling blowout SB losses during the Reeves era. Shanahan came in and helped save the day!! Not sure if you are old enough, or were a Broncos fan in the mid 80's to truly appreciate what Shanahan did in Denver. Maybe you are, were, i don't know.
BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE
I never, ever, speak bad about Shanahan. I have always pulled for him wherever he has coached. I haven nothing but good things to say about him. Those were special days and years in my life back during the Super Bowl runs. Dude was awesome!!!
BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE
I was sad (and surprised) when Bowlen let him go. I thought it came a year too early. The years post Elway were not too good, but it appeared he was putting players in place to make another run.
We'll never know...
Note king said "the last chunk of Shanahan's career". That's what I was referring to as well. Yes, I'm well aware of the two super bowl and am very appreciative for them. But the facts are what they are. Only 1 playoff win in over 10 years post elway. While the two titles were nice, that stretch just wasn't good enough. And his stint in Washington wasn't any better. So yeah, while 90s shanny was a genius, I think it's pretty fair to compare his career since then to Marvin Lewis.
Yea, if you're bored and like doing that you can analyze people all day and their careers. I'm just a guy that was a huge fan of the Denver Broncos and waited for years for someone to take this team to the Super Bowl and win one time. Just once. It happened with Shanny, his coaches, his players. That's all I wanted was 1 Super Bowl win. We got 2!! No#2 was a huge bonus!!! He was one of my heroes and favorite coaches. I don't personally care if he was good anywhere else. I'm only going to ever judge the guy for what he did in 97 and 98. The dude helped make my sports life an amazing time during those two years. And, I hope he gets another chance and can succeed!! I will always pull for the man!!! He was a legend for two years!!!!
BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE
I'm not debating any of that. I will also always appreciate shanny for bringing us those two titles. But when evaluating him as a coach today, he's just not the same as he was back then. That's not me bashing him, it's just a fact. This happens to most coaches though as they get older. The game continually changes and evolves and many times it passes the older coaches by. That's nothing against Shanahan, it's just the nature of football.
Want me to post the stats of many of the other great coaches after the loss of a Franchise QB? Coaches that won multiple Super Bowls? It's EASY to be Belicheck when you have Brady. Belicheck wasn't a good HC until that little surprise happened. I mean, he DID take Plummer to the AFC CHampionship, and that is something.
Its funny though. People want to brag about how good Dungy was at coaching...even getting a cushy TV job. He's a great guy, but has a LOSING playoff record, and that is WITH Manning as his QB. Yet Shanahan is only judged by what he's done SINCE Elway.
Then, there is Jeff Fisher. Everyone LOVES Jeff Fisher. Seventeen (17) years as a HC now, do you know how many seasons he's had over 8-8 in the NFL? Six (6). Just six winning seasons. Shanahan had winning seasons (over 8-8) in the 10 years after Elway while in Denver. But for some reason, Shanahan is always judged differently, isn't he? He's always given that caveate " since Elway" as if he's being judged because he hasn't won a Super Bowl with 2 different teams.
But the game hasn't passed anyone by. THe game today hasn't changed. The spread offense, is an OLD offense brought back. Do we not see the West Coast offense today? Even though Walsh was given credit for the West Coast offense, he didn't invent anything. He just used offensive plays the HE learned when he was playing. So the game of football today is no different than the game of yesterday.
