Default Doug Marrone opts out of Bills deal

Doug Marrone has opted out of his contract as coach of the Buffalo Bills and is now a free agent to pursue other jobs.

Marrone exercised the unique option during the final hours of a three-day window that opened Monday, stipulated in the four-year contract he signed with the Bills in 2013. The opt-out clause was included in the original contract in the event of an ownership change, which occurred when Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the franchise in October.

Bills sources believe that Marrone could have particular interest in the Jets, where he once served as offensive line coach for four years. Sources say the Jets will have strong interest in Marrone.

"I just found out Doug Marrone is available. We will look at him," owner Woody Johnson told the New York Daily News. "He is a coach who was with us. And I know him a little bit."

And apparently he might go to the Jets? That really seems like a downgrade. Odd move indeed.

That was my thought as well. Maybe he and the new owners don't like each other?

There were some ugly situations between Marrone and the interim ownership group early in the season. He might have known he was already a lame duck.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

It is strong there hasn't been much said about that nationally or in the local Buffalo media. I live in the Toronto area, so my US feed for local is Buffalo. I haven't read anything to suggest either way they did or didn't get along. I don't believe they have any sort of QB on that roster but I don't think the Jets are any better off and the rest of the team in Buffalo is pretty good.

just read Buffalo is looking at Frank Reich. Interesting because he is a former Bill but also because it is a huge change direction for a team that seemed to be going in the right direction.

How do you pay somebody to opt out of a contract with you? That can't be SOP. He should give his agent a raise.

I'd opt out too if I had that QB situation. They are on the upswing in most areas, but you know what happens with teams with no QB'ing, you fail. Look at the Cardinals right now. Horrible QB play and they will be one and out because of it.

I don't think the Jets have a better QB. IMO both those teams need to do everything they can to get better at that position.

It's a good and solid move, IMO. The Bills are fool's gold right now. They have no quarterback, Spiller is a huge talent with injuries issues, and an impending contract, Fred Jackson is aging, and their only other weapon on offense is Watkins. They had to move early round picks to get him, too, which is just a kick in the dick now that you are looking at guys like ODB Jr. and other rookies like Evans and Benjamin. That pass rush is sick, and they have one good LB, as well as no secondary.

Once you factor in the four million dollars due to the ownership change and lack of stability that it might bring, as well as his issues with the front office, why would you stay?

All good points King. I don't have 4 million bucks nor am I an NFL coach, but I can't imagine ever giving up a job like that. Plus they do have strong D, can build a secondary in FA like Denver has for the most part. Can get another RB and I would let Spiller walk before I pay him IMO. You have to sell out for a QB but the makings are there for a team. Plus you ever win anything in Buffalo and you are a football GOD.

    Thanks MasterShake!!!

I'm listening to local NY radio as I'm in and out of the car today, and it seems like the opinion of Jets fans is that they don't want him. One guy said he asked Bills fans he knew what to expect, and none of them seemed concerned about Marrone leaving, which should tell you something. The DJ read a quote from a Bills fan that said something like, "I can't wait for Marrone to go to the Jets." Something weird there.

As far as Marrone, though, take that four million for doing nothing. Why the hell not?

This kind of goes to my mind set. Yup four million is so much money I can't wrap my head around having that much but.... There are only 32 head coaches in the NFL and it isn't like this guy is a high end big name hire. He isn't promised another shot at this. Not that he is wrong but I can't even imagine walking away from an NFL head coaching job. I'm sure people can come up with four million reasons to walk but I can't imagine ever doing it. One of the best jobs on the planet imo....

    Thanks MasterShake!!!

They might be able to get a back in the third round. I assume that they have to spend their second rounder on a player in the secondary, and it's doubtful that they give up on Manuel this soon. IDK, I get what you're saying. It's the NFL, you can find good players in interesting spots and situations, and they're not that far off.
