Dogfish said this best last year, and I am paraphrasing him - Guys like Manning often times won't take a paycut not just because they love the money, but because they are competitive to the umptenth degree; part of it is being the highest paid guy with your deal. The money is a symbol as well as a currency.

It's also easy to say that we would take the pay cut.

Don't understand why this always comes back to trashing Peyton becaue he allegedly "won't take the paycut".

What Manning makes in endorsements dwarfs his football salary. Geez, how many national ad campaigns is he on? Pizza, insurance, cars, etc. If he wanted to take less, he certainly could.

I don't see much trashing on here. I just see Bronco fans wanting the Broncos to be as competitive as NE is, which Brady is giving NE the opportunity to be.

When has Denver needed Peyton to take less? Who have we lost out on because of his contract?

Besides, if you guys don't think Brady will wind up getting that 24 mil in a different way, you are kidding yourselves. Don't be naive, he didn't just politely decline a 24 million paycheck. There is more to this than is being reported.

Exactly. Cause when Elway did that patsy fans were first to point out that he still got his money - just in a different way.

This is being misreported or misunderstood by most people. Brady isn't giving up anything here, so all of the talk about how generous and what a team player he is appears overblown. The only thing he's giving up is job security - since the money isn't fully guaranteed anymore, evil Belichick could cut him and save the money. His cap number is the same; actually, it looks like it will now be HIGHER than it was going to be:

Brady gains in the exchange as well. As part of the restructure, the Patriots added an extra $1 million to each of the base salaries in Brady’s contract, per a source. Brady will now get $8 million in 2015, $9 million in 2016 and $10 million in 2017
They have more CASH, not more cap space. So they can do some fancy accounting with other contracts in the hope of making them more enticing, but they're going to have to pay the piper eventually. Same article:

It creates cash-flow flexibility for Patriots. On Saturday, the final three years of Brady’s contract -- $7 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017 – became fully guaranteed for “skill.” When that happened, it required the Patriots to have a $24 million cash commitment on their budget and by the end of March, the team would have had to have put that money up with the NFL because of league requirements. But with Brady agreeing to change the guarantee from “skill” to only “injury,” it means the Patriots don’t have to do that. So the team gains cash-flow flexibility with this move. It does not affect the salary cap.

Also of note - this says that it became fully guaranteed on Saturday - so how could they agree to a restructure after the fact?

See this interesting blog as well:

Question: How does this benefit the Patriots? Answer: It allows them to avoid putting $24 million in cash in escrow. Remember that Brady is not scheduled to receive some of the $24 million until the 2017 season. Not having $24 million tied up may allow the Patriots to offer their players and free agents larger than average signing bonuses or larger than normal fully guarantees as part of their deals. Removes the precedent of having a veteran having a fully guaranteed contract.
Questionid you think that this move would happen? Answer: Absolutely not. Was planning to blog how the Patriots could give Brady a signing bonus in the 10 to 18 million range while lowering his 2015 cap number. -

And with VM, JT, DT and Pot Roast all on deck we're going to need that and more. Manning needs to help...

Brady is going to get cut, or traded and Belicheck is going after Mariota.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

The Bucs are going to want too much for that to happen.

How about Tom Brady and a first round pick?

The Bucs would have to be insane to take that. Take our aging and declining QB to go with your subpar roster and aging FA 'conquests' for a stud prospect that can save your franchise and make them relevant for years to come. Although if that happened and then Tom Brady retired I would laugh so hard.

From my in initial post -

I have said it before - with all of the free agents the Broncos need to sign, I would love to see Peyton restructure his contract.
I said restructure, in regards to Peyton. Also, the article I posted, which started this thread, states in it that Brady restructured his contract. That should be pretty clear.

Apparently Matt Ryan/Julio Jones and Kaepernick are on trading block, what's Matt Cassel's status?
