Legendary Denver Broncos Offensive Line Coach Alex Gibbs famously instituted the “no talking” rule for the Offensive Line in the 1990’s. Basically, O-linemen were to be seen and not heard. If they spoke, they would be fined, and those fines went into a fund that took care of the Offensive Line party at the end of the year.
In recent years the Offensive Linemen had to talk by league rule. Left Guard Orlando Franklin has even had a weekly radio show for three years. Nonetheless, the offensive line still fines each other when someone talks to the media in any form. It’s all in good fun and they probably have a great party at the end of the year.
This week, while getting ready for a very good Miami Dolphins defense, the Broncos offensive line was under great scrutiny, and deservedly so. This led to a very strange occurrence in the Broncos locker room at Dove Valley. Every now and then a “Big Ugly” as the O-line is often referred to will agree to an interview in plain sight where they know they’ll be fined. This usually comes when there’s big news, like when Center Will Montgomery made his first start as a Bronco. But on Thursday, something took place that may have never taken place, ALL FIVE starting O-Lineman spoke to the media and all five guys met the criticism head on.
Left Tackle Ryan Clady, the most tenured Bronco on the roster, is aware of the unit’s struggles. “Yeah, as an offensive line we’re a big position group on this team. If we go, the team goes. We definitely need to improve. We had a bad week. I think we’ll get better and we’ll get it back on track,” Clady said. “It can be tough. I feel like we have a mature group, we’re not a bunch of rookies. We’ll definitely get the job done. Me and Orlando [Franklin] have communicated well on the field and definitely improved since the beginning of the season.”
