Bud Selig, in response to the NFL's controversial handling of Ray Rice's domestic abuse case, will meet with the baseball players' union this week to discuss adding a formal domestic violence policy to Major League Baseball's rules, the outgoing commissioner told USA Today on Monday.

"I constantly say that baseball is a social institution with very important social responsibilities," Selig said in a statement to USA Today. "Domestic violence is one of the one worst forms of societal conduct. We understand the responsibility of Baseball to quickly and firmly address off-field conduct by our players, even potentially in situations in which the criminal justice system does not do so."

Currently, there's no formal language in the players' union contract with MLB that addresses domestic violence.
