Default Chargers 30, Seahawks 21: First impressions

Bob Condotta: The Seahawks just could never keep San Diego’s offense off the field. Maybe it was the heat, or maybe the Chargers were simply the more desperate team. But this was a rare time an opposing offense seemed to be more aggressive than Seattle’s defense.

Jayson Jenks: The Seahawks lost this game because of costly mistakes: Bruce Irvin’s late hit, J.R. Sweezy’s false start in the fourth quarter, Percy Harvin’s fumbled kickoff. Those mistakes were far too common for the Seahawks to overcome a stellar day from San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers.

Larry Stone: The Seahawks were out of sorts all day. Russell Wilson was often under heavy pressure, and Phillip Rivers picked apart Seattle’s defense with a deft short passing game. If we had forgotten, or started to believe otherwise, this game was a pointed reminder: They’re human.

Default Keenan Allen: Sherman a 'normal guy'

SAN DIEGO - After making several catches against Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman on Sunday, San Diego Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen wasn't all that impressed with the Pro Bowl player.

"He's just a normal guy," Allen said of Sherman. "We can go at him. We took some shots at him. We are not going to shy away from him. He's not really a shutdown corner. We definitely wanted to come out and show we could go any way we wanted to and that we were in control of the game."

Allen had five receptions for 55 yards in the 30-21 upset victory over the Seahawks at Qualcomm Stadium. Unofficially, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers was 6-for-6 passing for 60 yards while throwing to receivers Sherman was covering.

It was a much different strategy than Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers used in the 36-16 Seattle victory last week when Rodgers didn't throw one pass at Sherman.

Default Chargers pull off perfect game in win over Seahawks

The San Diego Chargers needed a near-perfect game to beat defending champion Seattle Seahawks Sunday. That's what they got in a 30-21 upset. Here are our takeaways:

    1. Antonio Gates and Philip Rivers should send this game film to Canton. Their performance encapsulated everything that has made them one of the best duos in the league since Rivers took over nine years ago. All seven targets thrown to Gates were caught, for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Rivers kept dodging defenders and throwing improbable passes from uncomfortable platforms. No one throws a touch pass quite like Rivers.

Gates, meanwhile, made a handful of incredible grabs. Ladarius Green was nowhere to be seen. So much for Gates' decline.

    2. This looked just like the Chargers' 2013 offense at its best: Death by 1,000 five-yard runs and eight-yard catches. The Chargers controlled the game with the temperature over 90 degrees with three straight drives of at least nine plays to open the game. They scored in their first four possessions. They held the ball for 42 minutes. Seattle's running backs had only eight carries.

    3. It's rare to see the Seahawks' pass defense so thoroughly dominated. They missed a lot of tackles and struggled with short crossing patterns. Rivers wasn't afraid of throwing at Richard Sherman. They completed their first four passes toward Sherman for 56 yards.

Interesting to see BRONCO fans excited for a Chargers win. Seattle could of done us the favor and put the Chargers 0-2 and 2 games behind us in the AFC West.

Default Sherman comes back at Chargers

RENTON, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman denied he was avoiding the media after Sunday's loss at San Diego, and he chuckled at Chargers receiver Keenan Allen saying Sherman was a "normal guy and not a shutdown corner."

"You know, when a guy wants his name in the paper, he's gotta say something crazy," Sherman said about Allen on Wednesday. "It's humorous. I guess he wants something to tell his grandkids: 'Remember the day I caught a couple of balls on Richard Sherman? No touchdowns, but I caught a few.'"

    AND

"I played pretty well," he said. "But it's really funny that two little Chargers say I was exposed. One had 50 yards [Allen had five receptions for 55 yards], and one had 60 [Eddie Royal had seven receptions for 69 yards]. It makes you laugh."

This is why I don't think the Broncos can duplicate San Diego's blueprint. I was at a sports bar and had KC-DEN, SEA-SD, HOU-OAK all lined up in front of me so I did not have all my attention on the Chargers but every time I looked up, it seemed Rivers was having to avoid the rush and sling some off-balance throw that just happened to find Gates or Woodhead. It was a truly amazing performance but if the Hawks made Manning move that much - oh wait. That's what happened last February and you saw the results.

The Broncos are just going to need to block out the Hawks far better than the Chargers did because there's no way Manning is going to do what Rivers did. That's not Peyton's game. Keeping Peyton's uni clean is vital to winning this week.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.
