    Hard to imagine Malaysia has/had more than one plane.

    Most larger planes have a DFDR and a CVR. The DFDR (Digital Flight Data Recorder) will record, most oftentimes, the flight data from engine start to engine shutdown. The CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) loops over itself. The loop duration will vary from aircraft to aircraft (C-130 and B-1 are different). But if you think about it, when a catastrophic instance occurs, you really don't need more than two hours. Most of the time, you need much less.

    Yea, as I was typing that response, I was thinking "how often does anything other than the last few minutes, or seconds, come into an NTSB or similar investigation."

    Yep. If you go back and look at all of the catastrophic airline incidents over the last 20 years, none of them really lasted more than 45 minutes from time of emergency until the jet went down.
