    Default Netflix, Hulu, etc. Gems

What movies/shows have you like on Netflix, Hulu, etc. do you like that you...

    1) ... never heard of before.

    2) ...didn't watch the 1st time you had the opportunity to because you didn't think you'd like it. However, you're decide to try it for a few minutes & found out that it was better than expected.

    1) Foyle’s War: This is a British show set during WWII in Hastings, England. It centers around Chief Inspector Foyle, who investigates a variety of crimes because the police force is so shorthanded due to the war. Everything from public corruption, espionage, profiteering during a time of war, etc. At some point in each episode, someone is going to get murdered. The things that I like so much about this show:

    a. The episodes don’t go by a predictable formula. Maybe the murder will happen in the beginning of the episode, or maybe in the middle. They may start off investigation a murder & come across other crimes in the process, or maybe they’ll be investigating some crime only to have some involved in the case murdered. Every episode plays out differently.

    b. Because they only made 4, 2 hour episodes per year, there’re no garbage scripts that were the result of desperate writers trying to make their 2 dozen or so quota like often happens on weekly series.

    c. Excellent chemistry amongst the 3 main characters who actually like each other. Although all of them do have personal struggles typical of human beings, none of them have personal demons getting them in trouble. They are simple a team of 3 law enforcement professionals who go & get the job done.

    d. As a history buff, I like how they integrate major events, as well as other historical occurrences, that were happening at the time into their scripts. It’s a great way to sneak a history lesson into your crime drama.

    2) House of Cards: When I 1st signed up for Netflix, one of the 1st promos that I saw was for this show. Because I’m not that big of government corrupt shows, mainly because they tend to be extremely predictable, I had no interest in watching it. Nevertheless, I watched 1 episode with a friend & I got hooked.

Being in the UK there are always too many crime/police/drama shows to watch even though they may all be good. That being said I always enjoyed Foyles war. It showed some of what life was like for my grandparents during the war ie: rationing / the blitz.

Does anyone else find Netflix is pretty sparse on content? There are a lot of movies that I want to watch that aren't available for streaming. I don't really want to sign up for the DVD service, but quite a few movies are pushing me that way. Wouldn't have to for awhile, there are plenty of seasons of series that keep me busy, but not real impressed with movie selection.
