Default How many continents are there on planet earth?

I had an argument with a friend of mine and am curious to your answers.

State the number of continents and name them.

The seven-continent model is usually taught in China, India, parts of Western Europe and most English-speaking countries[citation needed], including Australia[24] and England[25]

The six-continent combined-Eurasia model is preferred by the geographic community[citation needed], Russia, Eastern Europe, and Japan.

The six-continent combined-America model is used in Spanish-speaking countries[26] and in some parts of Europe including Greece (equivalent 5 inhabited continents model (i.e. excluding Antarctica) still also found in texts).[18]

Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America

That Eurasia is just crap IMO - its Europe and Asia - they are not one

My friend who went to university in Mexico City said there were 4 continents.

The Americas, Austrialia, Antartica and EurAsiaAfrica.

Then he told me the highest mountain peak in the Americas was in Veracruz.

I told him he was on drugs. There were 7 continents. North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Antartica, and the highest peak was Mount McKinley in Alaska at over 20,000 feet.

My Mom said 7. My step-Dad said 7.

I was just curious what you guys remembered from school geography.

Your friend’s point of view makes a lot of sense to me. Dividing Europe & Asia at the Ural Mountains has never made sense to me.

Whether you should spit or combine of North & South America is defiantly more subjective then most people our taught in their schools, which may differ from country to country. A case could be made that the 2 are one continuous land mass, or that North America narrows to a narrow strip of land & South America then mushrooms out into a completely different continent.

The same could be said about the spiting or combining of Asia & Africa. If you do separate them, it’s a coin toss as to whether you consider the Sinai Peninsula as part of Asia or Africa because it really is its own little landmass that connects the two. I really could go either way on these issues.

Have any of you that say it has to be 7 because that's what your taught in American school ever considered the possibility that the American way of doing things isn't the only way.

Your right, we all know that every textbook in the world was written by American educators so everyone on the plant believes exactly the same things we do on every single subject.

Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)

Many countries do use American textbooks.
