  1. Default By The Numbers: Peyton Manning and his quest for the greatest season ever.

Peyton Manning’s return from his career threatening neck injury has been an exciting story to watch and very well documented.

Manning had a phenomenal season to watch in 2012. From being 3-3 going into the bye week to knocking out ten straight wins going into the post season, even a handicapped Peyton Manning was more effective than a full strength Tim Tebow or Kyle Orton. His numbers were top notch too, as he went a swift 400-583 for 37 touchdowns, a completion percentage of 68.6 and just 11 interceptions.

    Here are Manning’s career numbers:

The fact that Manning’s numbers in 2012 weren’t just one of the best of any quarterback of the season, but that they’re some of the best of Manning’s career is extraordinary.

    Examples:

    • Manning’s passing yardage in 2012 is the second best of his career (2010)

    • Manning’s average yard per pass in 2012 was the best of his career.

    • His touchdown passes were the second best of his career (2004)

    • His passing attempts were the third most of his career (2002, 2010)

Manning is having a terrific year in 2013 as well, from the seven touchdowns in week one against the Baltimore Ravens to last Sunday’s five touchdown performance against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Quarterback we in Denver have come to know and love is a touchdown machine.

Manning has a chance to achieve the most distinguished passing title in the league, again.

In 2004, Manning while with the Indianapolis Colts, broke Dan Marino’s touchdown record for most touchdowns thrown with 49. That record had stood for 20 years before Manning came along. However, just three years after in 2007, Tom Brady broke that same record with 50 touchdown passes in a season.

This season, Manning has a chance to recapture the record he recorded in 2004. The single season passing yardage record is held by Drew Brees, who passed for 5476 yards in 2011. As mentioned, Tom Brady owns the touchdown record with 50. Right now Manning has 4,125 yards and 41 touchdown passes putting him on pace for 5500 yards and 54.7 touchdowns. Manning has a clear path to complete the greatest single season performance of all-time but it won’t be easy.

He faces an uphill battle, here’s why.....CONTINUE READING...
