    Default Greatest Team Tourney

I am about to embark on a project, and thought some of y'all might be interested if I posted the progress of it. I have a computer simulation called Strat-o-Matic Football, which is about as statistically good a simulation as you can find. the graphics are current to @ 1990 standard, but I don't care. After all, its basically a converted board game.

Anyways, I am going to do a 128 team elimination tourney using the past seasons currently available, and will post the results as they occur. I will play all Bronco teams against the computer; and apart from that I will play the team with the weaker record, except for Raider, Steeler, or Ravens teams, in which case I will play the team I hate less.

It is set up exactly like a double sized NCAA Bracket, divided into the Topscribe (1957-90) and Whippersnapper (1991-2012) conferences. Here are the 16 team Brackets

    Bronconut Bracket

    1957 Lions 1957 Lions 45-30

I will probably play my first game or two tonight. For the record, my bracket predictions

Dreadnought Bracket - 1972 Dolphins, a team with almost no weaknesses

Tned Bracket - dark horse specials - either 1963 Chargers or 58 Colts

Bronconut Bracket - 1985 Bears. Clear edge over the rest of this bracket, unless they get unlucky

Chazoe Bracket - the winner of the first round 62 Packer/68 Chief matchup

GEM bracket - 2001 Rams or 2007 Pats

Frauschieze Bracket - 1998 Broncos the offense is extremely good, and I have played dozens of games with this team.

NTL Bracket - either 2000 Ravens or 2002 Bucs. Both teams have brutal defenses, and are surprisingly good

Mastershake Bracket - probably the 2010 Pats. I want to think 2012 Broncos, but their running is too weak for this kind of competition

So there is a Bronconut bracket, but no Slim bracket?

Yeah, I don't think anyone is going to be interested in this.

    1957 Lions 45 - 1978 Steelers 30

First game in the books, and an upset. The 1978 Steel Curtain falls to the 1957 Lions. The Steelers had a catastrophic start, as the ballhawking Lions picked off Terry Bradshaw 3 times in the first half en route to 24 unanswered points and a 24-3 halftime margin. Pittsburgh launched a furious comeback, finally scoring a TD with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, and racked up 3 more TD's in the 4th - but too little, too late. Detroit ran 50 times for 254 yards, led by sledge hammer FB John Henry Johnson with 71 yards. Even an injury to Lions QB Bobby Layne (allegedly - I suspect he was hung over) was not enough to stop the Lions

This one was far higher scoring than I anticipated, as both teams are defensive powerhouses.

Boxscore - its a little clumsy, but scroll down

    1969 Raiders 24 - 1973 Steelers 20

Good battle between two teams I hate -the 1969 Raiders v. the 1973 Steelers. 1973 Terry Bradshaw may be the worst QB in the tournament, apart from 1972 Terry Bradshaw, and he was erratic as usual. I played the Steelers in this one.

Darryl Lamonica overcame 3 interceptions, and hit Warren Wells with a late game winner from 8 yards out with under a minute to play. The Steelers had stopped a late Oakland drive with an interception with @ 2 minutes left to go, but were unable to move the ball. The Raiders made them pay on their next possession. Terry Bradshaw only hit on 8 attempts, killing Pittsburgh drives pretty regularly.

    1977 Broncos 25 1957 Browns 22
Tough one for the good guys. In a back-and-forth game that featured a fourth quarter comeback Denver defeated Cleveland by the score of 25 to 22. Craig Morton passed 40 times for 305 yards adding a touchdown.. The game saw 6 lead changes before Denver finally prevailed. The Orange Crush did a great job stifling the Browns offense, but a couple of breakdowns led to a couple of long completions by Cleveland QB Tommy O'Connell including a 72 yard strike to Darrell Brewster.

I don't see the 77 Broncos going deep in the tourney, as the running game is pretty pokey and the pass blocking is best described as a bunch of turnstiles. Fun defense to play though
